Sania’s Wedding on April 15

Hyderabad/Karachi, Mar 30, PTI: Announcing her marriage with Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik on April 15 in Hyderabad, tennis star Sania Mirza on Tuesday said she would retain her Indian passport and play for India in the 2012 Olympics.

Flying back to Hyderabad after a lightning visit to Delhi, where she secured visa from the Pakistan High Commission for going to Lahore for a reception, she declined to go into “uncomfortable” details about where she met Shoaib, but said she knew him for the last seven years.

She made it clear that they would settle down in Dubai, which she called a “home away from home” and just three hours’ flight from Hyderabad.

During a brief interaction with the media in the company of her father at her residence, the 23-year-old Sania said she would be lying if she did not expect the development to be a shock.

But both of them and their families were happy about the marriage, the tennis star said. She said she had received messages of best wishes from several people both in India and Pakistan. “We are getting married. We are also not making any political statement or anything on (Indo-Pak) relations. It’s a simple matter. We are getting married,” she said when a reporter asked whether she would like others to emulate her example.

Asked who she would support in case of an India-Pakistan cricket match, she said: “I will obviously support India but I will also support my husband.”

To a question, she said she would continue to hold Indian passport and was looking to play for India in the 2012 Olympics. “I’m not going to answer nor will Shoaib be comfortable answering personal questions,” she said when asked when the two started seeing each other. Sania and her father distributed sweets to mediapersons during the interaction and when asked about opposition from the VHP and other rightwing groups on her marrying a Pakistani, she said, “We are happy. You should not speak such things with mithai in your hands.”

Saying that the marriage would not in any way affect their career, Sania said: “I will continue to play tennis after wedding and he will also continue to play for his country.”

In Pakistan, Shoaib Malik interacted with the media where he said both families were happy with the marriage. “Inshallah, we are getting married soon and our families are very happy,” he said. Six members of Shoaib’s family have reportedly applied for visas to travel to India for the wedding in Hyderabad.

Mr. Joseph every citizen in this world is equal in the eyes of the Almighty. There is no 1st class or 2nd class citizens. Its people like you who potray these classes. There can be good and bad people in every country. Sania or Shoaib has not involved in your personal life to check how many extra marital affairs you have had, or how many sins you have done. Stop pointing fingers at others and look to your own. Live and let live.

Really Appreciate Mr. Shahnawaz Kukkikatte and Mr. Mohammad (Kundapur), comments. They are right in every aspect. I think Sania has her own opinion on her personal life / relationships, She is Indian Icon who plays for our country, and that too after NOV 26/ mumbai attacks, relations are not good with India and Pak. So she would have thought on wider and broader aspect, being a celebrity. Moreover, what we can see happening in lahore everyday, lots of bomb blasts, and also,if god forbidden, anything happens to dubai, she will have tough choice to choose if to stay in india or pakistan, anyway it is her life, her headache.

Dear Abdul Rahiman Dubai,in ordinary case your opinion is understandable! But see here,we Indians gave her love, support, oneness feeling(nationalism)and we even felt her as a role model.Even though we have no right to question about her private life but she is public figure,an icon,an ambassador of India.

The would be shoeb, who had already ditched her native girl for cynical reason, is worth to palatable?????

Under prevailing situation between India and Pakistan relationship even an ordinary man think twice to get marry Pakistani national.Certainly unfare and ditching on the part of Sania and she should not allowed to represent India in any capacity. She made all Indians down pariculary muslims of India.

In India Pak match would she whole heartedly support India or he adopted country/husband?????She lost everything name/fame and country of birth!!!!!

Dear all, an Indian girl marries to a Pakistani boy, which means she and her children will be treated as second class citizens just like the Biharis who have migrated from India to Pakistan. The Bangladeshis who are willing to migrate to Pakistan are stranded in Bangladesh and they are neither Pakistanis nor Bangladeshis and from both sides they are ketchup.

Dear Shanawaz, Kukkikatte, Very well said, as usual. A grand salute to you Sir, .
Sania should not be allowed to represent India anymore since her half paijaama would be Paki.
Sohaib should not be allowed to India, let them go anywhere and live. The reason behind Sania not surrendering her Indian nationality after her marriage is she is very well aware that within six months she has to come back to India only when she is divorced. Also Indian media should not give importance to such matters.

Sania was representing India and she availed many privileges as a sportsperson of India. When things are not good with Pakistan she should not have ventured in to this relation. This is nothing but money game and it is only because of Shoaib's wealth Sania and her family endeavoured into this relationship. Every Indian Muslim feel ashamed for this development particularly at this stage when the relation with Pakistan is atrocious and actions of every Indian Muslims are being watched. The national Interest is foremost for a loyal citizen and under the circumstances Indian Govt should not allow Sania to participate in Olympics.

I am deeply saddened. But I am sure, life shall not be that easy for her in Pak as she thought. How these two families shall meet and iteract in the future? Pak still has not considered India as a true friend. Pakistan has been showing irresponsible attitude, violent behaviour towards India. Now Pak is all set to steal the pride and jewel of India.

Why we should let it to so easily. Mother India gave birth to Sania, she was bred here in our soil, she rose to fame in our soil. But she opted to marry a guy from our neighbour who is our ill wisher. Had she opted for any boy other than this Paki, I would not have been hurt and commented here. Any way God has given her/her parents good wisdom. I wish her best of luck wherever she goes. But it will surely hurt me if she plays for Pakistan after her marriage.....

Marrying is every individual choice, but playing for the our country is the contries choice, so she should not be allowed to represent India any more, if we do so its shame for the entire nation. All the i would like to say is India do need Sanias service any more from the moment she marrays to an another national that especially with a country like Pakistan.

India has thousnads of Millions of Sania who are even far better than the present sania, only the thing is they have to be tapped.

All the Best to Sania, enjoy your life as its a really challenge for you to live in in the most dangerous place on earth to live in.

Marrying anyone is their personal issue but marrying a pakistani. I don't know what she has thought. As canute said i don't think she can any more play for India. She should be told not to play for India. We had so many bitter experience with Pakistan and Sania thought that she can lead a peacefull life in Pakistan. If she had thought its her foolishness. How long she can stay in Dubai. I had good opinion for Sania before. Tommorrow she might say i need pakistani nationality hence before she says we should ask her to leave India. After all pakistan is pakistan we can't be friendly with them.I hope every indian agrees with me.
