Mangaluru: Pumpwell central bus stand project gets going - Tender called

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 4: The city's long-cherished dream of having a well-equipped central bus stand is inching towards becoming a reality. In an important step, tender has been floated for the central bus stand project. The 'Integrated bus terminal and commercial complex development project' will be executed by Mangaluru Smart City Ltd. Total estimated cost of the project is Rs 445 crore and October 13 is the last day for the submission of tenders.

The project will be implemented on Public Private Partnership (PPP) model under the smart city project. After the finalisation of the tender, the contracting firm has to complete the works within a period of three years. The project will have a bus terminal with 180 bus bays, and facilities for private and KSRTC bus services. Bus facility for long route buses will be created separately. Shopping mall with ten lac sq ft space, office space, multi-level car parking facility for the general public etc have been included in the project. This is a totally new bus stand concept in the state. Those who get the contract under the PPP model will maintain it for 40 years and then hand over the bus stand to Mangaluru City Corporation.

A 7.23-acre private land for the bus stand had been acquired in 2009. It has been nearly three years since the work of levelling the land by mud was taken up. In the past, there was a proposal to start bus stand at this space by laying interlocks on experimental basis and the practicality of locating the bus stand somewhere else was also discussed. After considering alternatives like Padil and Kulur, finally, Pumpwell remained as the place of choice for the modern bus stand.

Currently the service bus stand has been functioning on a temporary basis in the space meant for hockey ground near Nehru Maidan since the last 24 years.

It's a waste of money and the future of Mangalore city will vanish. Nowadays traffic are uncontrollable in pumpwell area National highways and the authorities want to make more traffic by constructing the central bus stand. First of all make necessary arrangements in nanthoor junction as the traffic is very heavy. Already the pumpwell junction has vanished with heavy soil filling flyover. Please make attractive, useable flyover and beautiful town planning.

It is a well known fact that a few people from hotel industry successfully and continually blocked Padu Bidri Airport. The problems of a small runway is just being tolerated at the risk of many lives. They have the blood of those hundreds of people who perished in the air crash. Now we are stuck with this table top mess for good.
A few from Bus mafia over the years successfully have blocked much train connections to Mumbai and Goa.
Now we have to see how long this drama over this bus stand will go on. Mangloreans continue to suffer due to the selfishness of just a few. No end in sight.

In fact now after so many years of plans to construct a bus stand at Pumpwell, the planners should think of a change and move to Padil.

First of all let us congratulate the administration for taking this long waited project.
However, don't understand the logic behind this New Bus stand construction without futuristic and sustainable plans under the #SmartCity.
Connectivity to the NH would ease the traffic once the project is over but no can guarantee the traffic free or less traffic NH, since already Pumpwell circle is burdened with heavy traffic.
They should have constructed Bus Stand then could have planned for Pumpwell redevelopment
Anyway, will leave the matter to the highly qualified City planners to take best-est plan in beautification of Mangalore.
Hope this will be completed by 2030
