Kundapur, Aug 27: In a raid that took on Thursday, DCIB police arrested five persons who were accused of stealing rice stored in a government godown that was meant for free distribution.
The godown is situated in Koteshwara in Kundapura taluk. In this operation by the DCIB Police of Kundapur, 55 tonnes of rice was seized from the warehouse.
The raid took place under the leadership of DCIB police inspector Manjappa. The police officers also recovered Rs 2.75 lac cash, three cars from the spot.
The preliminary investigations revealed that the accused were stealing the rice from the government godown in Kundapur and transporting it to Kerala. There were also involved in polishing the rice and selling it off for a higher price as 'Sona Masuri' brand of rice in the market.
The arrested persons are residents of Moodugopadi, Kundapur and Kerala. As per the police, loss worth crores of rupees is estimated in this case.
DCIB inspector Manjappa, ASI Ravichandra, Santhosh Kundar, Ramu Hegde, Dayanand, Rajkumar, Chandra Shetty, Suresh, Raghavendra, Shivanand, Raghavendra (driver) were in operation.
