Mangaluru, Aug 23: The city's famous Central theatre, which was established years ago, much before the arrival of multiplexes, will be a memory now.
Work is under way to demolish the theatre.
College students to families, the theatre holds many memories for movie buffs in and around the city. However, with the arrival of multiplexes and malls, popularity of threatres like Central began to wane.
Central theatre used to be the first choice of movie distributors in Mangaluru. Silver Jubilee of Sandalwood actor Shivarajkumar's movie 'OM' was celebrated in this theatre. Doyen of Kannada cinema Dr Rajkumar was also present on the occasion of the celebration of the silver jubilee.
'Indrajit', a movie starring Rebel Star Ambarish, had run for 100 days in Central theatre. The interesting part is that the owner of the theatre himself was the producer of this movie.
Many Tulu movies were also launched in this theatre. The theatre was closed for public viewing for the past two years. It was also heard that the theatre would being refurbished into a multiplex.
However, now the theatre building is being demolished. As per official sources, a commercial complex would be coming up in its place.
