Beltangady, Aug 22: Three teachers from Karnataka, including Yakub S, a teacher at Nada government high school in Beltangady, have been chosen for the coveted National Award to Teachers by the union ministry of education this year.
The other two teachers selected for the award are Surekha Jagannath, a teacher at Afzalpura government high school in Kalaburagi district, and Chemmalar Shanmugham, head teacher of Kendriya Vidyalaya at Jalahalli of Bengaluru.
In total, 47 teachers throughout the country have been selected for the award. As many as 153 teachers were shortlisted for the award. The list of the awardees has been published on the website of union education ministry.
Yakub had drawn the attention of the education department when he established a mathematics laboratory in the government school where he teaches. He started this with the help of the locals. The lab helped in teaching maths in an easy manner to the students of the school.
Yakub's achievement had caught the attention of the education faculty throughout Karnataka and he was awarded the state-level best teacher award too. He started his teaching career in 1996 and since then has contributed immensely to the overall development of the government school where he is teaching. More than 300 of Yakub's videos of simple maths teaching are available on YouTube.
Yakub is the son of Isubu Byari and Alimamma, natives of Koyyuru Unnalu. He completed his primary education in his native place. He then pursued his education from Government Teachers' Educational Institute in Mangaluru and started his career as teacher in Nada government high school. He has also served as the assistant director of Akshara Dasoha programme from 2007 to 2012.
After getting news about the award, an elated Yakub said, "I am happy that I have got the national-level best teacher award. This is an encouragement to my sincere effort. I have tried to impart quality education to the students of government school also. This was possible due to the cooperation of all. I am thankful to all the students and lovers of education, who joined hands with me in my effort of establishing mathematics laboratory in the school."
