Bengaluru, Aug 21: It is learnt that the labels on the medicines and tablets supplied to the ISIS terrorists medical camp at Syria provided an initial clue about the involvement of Dr Abdul Rehman with the terrorist outfit, sources said.
Dr Abdur Rehman, working for M S Ramaiah Hospital here, who was arrested three days back, had spent ten months after completing MBBS degree in 2018 at the ISIS camp. In the early 2019, Russian and American forces had raided the terrorist camps at Syria. During these raids, stock of medicines were found with Indian labels on them. The information that help had come from India to the ISIS terrorists was revealed and this information was conveyed to the Indian intelligence.

The labels contained manufacturing company name and batch of medicines. The unique numbers printed on them helped in finding out that the medicines were sold from Bengaluru. The National Investigation Agency also guessed that the purchases were made by persons having good knowledge of medicines. Based on this information, the NIA initially arrested the Jahaneb couple from Delhi. Through them, the agency came to know that Abdur Rehman had helped procurement of medicines. NIA which kept a close watch on the movement of the doctor who stayed in an apartment complex at Basavanagudi, arrested him.
It was found that medical assistance was provided to the ISIS through Islamic State Khorasan Province which functions under the banner of ISIS. NIA also found out that Abdur Rehman was among those who travelled to Syria from India in 2018. Rehman was in touch with the ISIS in the form of a concealed identity, 'Dr Brave Gupta'. He was identified as a good ophthalmologist of M S Ramaiah Hospital. Those in contact with the ISIS used to address him as Dr Brave Doctor Basavanagudi. His friends and colleagues are taken aback now that his ISIS connection has been revealed.
