Mangaluru, Aug 15: The number of people dying from Covid-19 related issues is increasing day by day in the district of Dakshina Kannada. Patients who are being treated in the hospital for various diseases and turn positive for coronavirus require plasma therapy. So there is a strong pressure to start plasma collection centres or plasma banks.
The district administration also is looking into this aspect. Deputy commissioner Dr K V Rajendra has sought report from district health officer Dr Ramachandra Bayari and medical superintendent of Wenlock hospital Dr Sadashiva regarding the facilities available in the district for plasma therapy.

Dr Rajendra said, "If the private hospitals of the district are interested to start this facility, we will try to get the permission of the state government. I do not know whether necessary infrastructure is available in the district Wenlock hospital for plasma collection or plasma bank."
Convener of Wellness Helpline organization, Qasim Ahmed said, "There is no dearth of plasma donors in the district. The problem is that there is no infrastructure in the district. It will be convenient for the public if permission for plasma collection is given in the city of Mangaluru itself.
"There is no awareness of plasma collection in Mangaluru. As there is no awareness and no permission to collect plasma, the donors are rushing to Bengaluru. The state government has given permission to collect plasma to only a few hospitals of Bengaluru," said Qasim Ahmed.
MLA U T Khader said, "The state government has to take guidelines with regards to the infrastructure that is required for opening plasma bank. In addition, it has to keep track of people who are cured of Covid-19 infection. They have to be made aware of plasma donation also."
