Bengaluru: Disturbances - Number of accused swells, DJ Halli become police fortress

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Aug 12: In connection with the disturbances which happened in front of the residence of Congress MLA Akhanda Srinivas Murthy on Tuesday night, police have virtually turned DJ Halli and KG Halli into police fortresses by deploying large number of personnel there.

Already over 110 accused have been taken into custody by the police relating to the disturbances. The police have been chasing away people loitering in the area without purpose. Karnataka State Reserve Police staff have been manning the roads around Murthy's residence.

The police are busy identifying the people who participated in the disturbances and vandalized the area. The city police commissioner has been personally supervising the operations. Teams headed by deputy commissioners of police, assistant commissioners of police, inspectors and central crime bureau teams have been formed. On the basis of mobile locations, suspects are being summoned and questioned.

Home minister Basavraj Bommai is in constant contact with senior police officers and getting periodical reports. Minister R Ashok, visited the spot and appraised chief minister B S Yediyurappa. So far, the identity of the people who engineered the disturbances could not be ascertained.

Naveen, a relative of the said MLA, the Facebook post shared by whom reportedly ignited the disturbances, is being questioned at KG Halli police station about the derogatory post he had shared on social media. It is said that Naveen has claimed that his Facebook account has been hacked and that someone had done his purposefully as part of a well-planned conspiracy. It is said that disturbances were based on the allegation that the MLA's brother-in-law had shared a Facebook post projecting Prophet Mohammad Paigambar in poor light.

Violence in Bengaluru over 'derogatory' social media post

Bengaluru, Aug 12 (IANS): Violent protests broke out in eastern Bengaluru late on Tuesday night over a "derogatory message' posted by a politician's relative on social media.

A mob gathered outside Congress legislator Akanda Srinivas Murthy's house where they shouted slogans against the post and also resorted to arson.

The mob was demanding the arrest of Naveen, who is related to Murthy and rioted in DJ Halli, KG Halli and Pulakeshi Nagar.

Murthy, the legislator from Pulikeshi Nagar, posted a video on social media asking the mob to stop the agitation.

"Please don't resort to violence over the mischievous work of some miscreants," appealed Murthy.

A large mob was also seen opposite KG Halli police station in the city.

Another mob barged into the DJ Halli police station and torched some vehicles and vandalised furniture, proceeding to attack a few policemen.

Hundreds of rioters raised slogans at the top of their voice and continuously banged the gate of DJ Halli police station.

Photographs showing the vandalism outside the DJ Halli police station went viral.

The mob chanted religious slogans even as some members from the same community tried to calm down the mob.

'Mat karo', said one of the persons who tried to calm down the mob as many mask-wearing protesters came out into the streets.

Meanwhile, to control and disperse the mob, policemen in riot gear were deployed and baton-charged protesters who resorted to arson and also overturned the police vehicle.

Chamarajpet MLA B. Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan also requested the rioters to stay calm and maintain peace in the area.

"The incident that is happening in Kaval Bysandra is unfortunate. I am hopeful that police will take action against all those who are responsible for this," said Khan.

City Police Commissioner Kamal Pant visited the riot-hit areas where a heavy police presence has been deployed, an official said on Wednesday.

"Unfortunate incidents have occurred in localities like DJ Halli and KG Halli. Police carried out a baton charge to bring the situation under control," said a police official adding strict action will be taken against guilty.

State home minister Basavaraj Bommai has also warned of strict action against those who take law into their hands.

More than an hour ago, Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind leader Mufti PM Muzzamil also sent out a video message from outside the DJ Halli police station, flashing a paper in his hand.

He said an FIR was lodged against the person who made the derogatory post and assured the protesters that he will be arrested.

Muzzamil appealed the rioters to keep their emotions in control.

Meanwhile, police mistook a couple of journalists as rioters and hit them with a pole.

"Your police hit my head with a pole even though we kept yelling we are reporters," complained a television journalist to the police commissioner.

Another journalist who went to cover the riot was hit in the back.

"We had to run from your police to save ourselves when there was a no mob present," said the injured journalist whose head was seen bleeding.

The journalist said that he and others came to see what is actually happening at the ground zero but were attacked by the police without any provocation even though there was no mob around.

Look at the ignorance of people to defend God's reputation...!!! Even if someone had posted something objectionable about the prophet all that was needed is to file a police complaint... Register a case... Take it to social media platforms... What did they get by burning and damaging property....? Attacking the cops... During this time of pandemic so many bussiness are incurring losses ... Now because of these ignorant morons people of that area will suffer due to curfew and damage of the property. Due to such incidents all people of that COMMUNITY will be painted in a bad light, which is sad..But it's high time the EDUCATED people of that community come out and condemn such incidents else their silence will justify such actions...!
If people feel offended due to someone commenting about their religion, honestly it's time to stop following religion , be it any religion....!

If you see the live video's of riots it was terrifying.

It looked as if they do not care about any police force. They were attacking police station, journalists, burning and vandalising places.

Police should have some emergency forces well equipped to deal with such situation. Do not show any mercy on these vultures, who if let go will prove as a menace to society.

Violence, vandalism, is unacceptable in any form in our nation !!! If every individual come out on the street to settle scores, then we can imagine the death, destruction, perpetuated by brainwashed hooligans in our society !!!! This unrest, definitely indicates, a well orchestrated pogrom, let loose to create fear, by a systematic mob, in the shortest period of an hour !!! The state must identify the core leaders n their organizations... they must recover every paisa, by attaching their assets, further damages must be levied and the culprits must be prosecuted at the earliest !!!

In a civilized society people should complaint to police about such media posts. Instead rioting and arson of public properties is very bad. If for a social media post all such sick people start rioting then it is a disaster for the country. Government should issue a standing order of shoot at sight for miscreants who are indulging in arson and rioting instead of opposing in a democratic way. Kangaroo law can't b allowed. Beware Also ppl across the borders r spewing venom by hacking ppls social media and spreading such derogatory posts..Refrain from burning your own house.
Dangerous side of Technology..more destruction than creation.

Guys ! this is not the time to make riot ! the guy who incited the RIOTS to be booked under GOONDA ACT without any bail for another ten years. And those who participated to distractions of public property to be send to the JAIL without trail. The MLA is in video to be sacked immediately barring him from the elections for another 10 years including that ZAMEER.
