Udupi, Mar 17: The local municipality is planning to put to use the Beedinagudde dumping yard in the heart of the town, which had been an eyesore and a contentious issue since the last several years, for setting up of a park, a playground and a walking track.
The garbage dumping yard has since been shifted to Alevoor, where a solid waste management plant is operating. At the same time, Beedinagudde is not fully free of garbage, as some people have been dumping the garbage here, oblivious to the need to keep it free of further waste.
Beedinagudde has often been in the news, mostly for wrong reasons, either because of the strong, nauseating stench it gives out when sun shines brightly after rain, or when the waste catches fire, spreading smoke with foul smell in the town.
The municipality now wants to use the dry garbage at Beedinagudde for land filling. The work of finalizing the design for the park, playground and jogging track has been taken up, and the land levelling work at Beedinagudde is set to be taken up soon, municipal sources added.
The cost of the entire project is put at two crore rupees, and the playground is set to be located at the centre, with park and jogging track planned to be built around it..
