Mangaluru, Aug 7: Ghat sections of the districts in Malnad region have been getting incessant rainfall since the last some days. The water that is forcefully flowing westwards also has been bringing along trees and wood with it. These items pose grave danger to bridges in Didupa and Charmadi areas.
A bridge standing at Kalbettu in Didupe, Malavanthige, village across River Netravati was damaged on Wednesday. This bridge is used by over 150 families. At the same time, bridges across Mrutyunjaya rivulet at Antara and Aranepade in Charmadi too are facing danger. Huge logs are getting accumulated at Aranepade bridge. These things were cleared twice on Thursday but the inflow has been bringing in more wood, as a result of which the bridge got inundated. Locals complain that because of this, water is gushing towards their plantations and damaging them.
Assistant commissioner Yatish Ullal, said that the river has deviated from its normal course as wood has got stuck at the vented dam at Antara, Charmadi. He said that trees which got stuck have been removed with the help of backhoe. He asked people to contact taluk office or panchayat in case of danger.
As many as 32 families from Ganesh Nagara in Mittabagilu village were accommodated in the care centre opened at the local government school as their houses are facing danger.
In Charmadi Ghat, boulders and sand which fell down have been cleared and a backhoe has been stationed there permanently to attend to emergencies.
Water flowing down from the ghat area are posing threat of food for people living near rivers Netravati and Kumaradhara. These rivers are nearing the danger level of 30 meters. Compared to ghat and Malnad regions, coastal areas got less rainfall on Thursday.
