Mangaluru, Aug 6: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC) Dr K V Rajendra, instructed the officials not to allow construction activities including houses, commercial complexes or other buildings in spots that are considered dangerous in the district. He was speaking after chairing a meeting of the district disaster management authority held at the auditorium of the DC's office on Wednesday August 5.

When heavy rain, flood and other natural calamities happen, buildings constructed at such spots crash, even giving rise to loss of lives on certain occasions. The district is increasingly witnessing the urge to unscientifically level hillocks and construct buildings there. They are very dangerous, he said, and directed officials not to issue licences for such activities henceforth.

Noting that rainfall is becoming intense, he instructed officials to identify vulnerable houses, protective walls, buildings, electric poles etc in advance and take steps to clear them. He felt that if the officials can identify the dangers which are likely to happen in the future, such incidents can be thwarted. He also felt that delay in relief and rescue measures cannot be tolerated.

Noting that houses of people who lost houses due to heavy rains last year have not yet been completed and handed over to them even though compensation has been disbursed. He asked officials to remain in touch with beneficiaries and disburse compensation promptly.

Noting that diseases like dengue, chikungunya and rat fever normally get aggravated during the rainy season, he directed health department officials to also give preference to regulating these diseases in addition to coronavirus infection.

District superintendent of police Laxmi Prasad, deputy forest conservator Karikalan, deputy commissioner of police Arunangshugiri, and officials of different departments were present.
