Kasargod, Aug 4: In connection with the hacking to death four persons by a man at Gurikumeru in Bayar Kaniyal within Paivalike panchayat limits near Kumble on Monday August 3 evening with an axe, it is said that the killer, who happened to be the nephew of three maternal uncles and an aunt who were killed, was angry that his relatives had not evinced enough interest in finding him a suitable match and getting him married.
Udaya, who slayed four of his own close relatives, would also have killed his mother, Laxmi. Laxmi escaped from him, ran to a nearby house belonging to Krishnappa, and hid herself there. The accused was caught hold of by the locals and handed over to police.
Udaya, who is unmarried, it is said, used to get treatment from doctors for his psychological problems since the last few years. Four days back, he had threatened to kill all his relatives as he held them responsible for him remaining a bachelor. He made use of one of the axes which were inside the house as one of his uncles, Vittal, was engaged in fixing handles for axes, sharpening their edges etc. He suddenly picked one of these axes and proceeded to butcher his unsuspecting uncles and an aunt.
After killing four and attempting to kill his mother, the accused had ran away. He had run half a km away when the people caught hold of him at Kattathar and brought him back in an auto rickshaw. When he tried to flee again, they bound him with ropes and handed over to the police when they came.
Kasargod deputy superintendent of police, Balakrishnan Nair, visited the spot and arrested the accused; Manjeshwar police have registered a case and begun investigation.
