Goa farmers worry over rainwater filling up paddy fields

Daijiworld Media Network - Poinguinim

Poinguinim, Jul 20: Canacona farmers have grown anxious for their freshly transplanted paddy saplings. The farmers worry that longer duration of being submerged in floodwater could very well destroy the crops.

The monsoon has resulted in water swelling up in the Talpona river and flowing into the low-lying areas of Canacona. The rains and water are now proving to be disastrous for agricultural activities in the area.

Strong winds also uprooted many trees, with some crashing on houses and causing considerable loss to the owners. Narayan Komarpant from Patnem-Colomb suffered a loss of more than Rs 10,000 after an old tree damaged his house. A huge jackfruit tree crashed on a house at Zalawadi, Gaondongrim, causing a loss of Rs 5,000.

Meanwhile, the fire personnel of Canacona station have cleared fallen trees and were able to save properties worth Rs 25,000. As per the department, trees were uprooted at Agonda and Khola blocking the roads in some areas.
