Karkala: Unconscious toddy tapper spends two hours atop palm tree

Karkala, Jul 17: In a miraculous incident, Santosh, a toddy tapper from Kadandale Kalloli, turned unconscious whilst on the job atop a palm tree. He spent two hours in that state and miraculously survived the ordeal.

The incident happened at Kadandale near here on Wednesday July 15.

Santosh lost consciousness while tapping toddy atop a palm tree at around 6.30 am on Wednesday. He was stuck in that position between the palmyra fronds for two hours. Owner of Porlu Lunch Home at Sankalakaria, Sudhakar Salian, who came to Kadandale to collect toddy, saw that many people had gathered at the bottom of the palm tree. He called the fire brigade.

Meanwhile, Narayan, Dinesh and Ashok from the village, who are experienced in climbing up palm trees, were summoned by others to the spot. The three went up the tree and made efforts to rescue Santosh. Fire brigade personnel who arrived there, brought Santosh down with the help of locals, and admitted him into the hospital. While being taken in Sudhakar's car to the hospital, Santosh regained consciousness.

The effort made by Sudhakar Salian, Ashok, Dinesh, Narayan and the firemen in saving Santosh's life has come in for lavish praise.

    People of similar profession should be careful especially who crossed 40 yrs of age. In some cases muscle catch(calf muscles) also occurs while climbing the tree which is very very painful I have witnessed this incident of a person who plucks the coconuts! After 40 yrs one should regular in health check-up!
