Udupi, Feb 23: The protestors opposing the setting up of Nagarjuna power plant gheraoed the police station at Padubidri here on Sunday February 21 demanding immediate action against the people representing Nagarjuna-Lanco (UPCL), who are undertaking the works on railway line related to the UPCL. The protestors alleged that these goonda elements threatened the locals and forcibly undertook the works, which was illegal as the land is not awarded as the aggrieved who have lost land have not been compensated.
The protestors alleging that police were hand-in -glove with such elements raised slogans against the police accusing them of neglecting complainants by not registering many of the complaints given against such elements. For a while, a verbal duel too ensued between the protestors and the police.
The protestors further demanded that action needs to be taken against such goonda elements as well as stop the illegal works and restore the area. The protestors also demanded to cancel the pistol licence of such goonda elements among others.
Kapu circle inspector B Cheluvaraju after receiving the memorandum, assured the protestors to look into all the demands in a week’s time. The protestors called off their protest after the assurance and warned of Padubidri bandh if the demands are not fulfilled in a week.
The representatives of Nagarjuna Virodhi Horata Samiti, Nandikoor Janajagruti Samiti, Bajrang Dal, Padubidri zone among others participated in the protest.
