Gadag, Feb 21: “For the first time in the history of Kannada Sahitya Sammelana a serious thought has been given to agriculture. This tradition should continue”, said activist Kadidal Shamanna.
He was speaking as a chief guest at the second day of 76th Kannada Sahitya Sammelana which dealt with agricultural issues.
Shamanna called on people to be guarded against the multi-national companies which can be a threat to nation’s food security.
Kodihalli Chandrashekar spoke on the effects of modernization on farmers and agriculture. In reply to those who compared India’s progress to that of China he said that the developments in China cannot be compared to that of India since it is four times larger than India and has a control over its population level and food security.
He also said that Kuvempu had written good poems related to agriculture but off late such literature has reduced. Since Kannada Sahitya Sammelan has taken an initiative to discuss agricultural issues and problems faced by farmers, he hoped more such literary woks will come up.
Litterateur B Anasuyamma spoke about woman’s role in agricuture.
Earlier, Erayya Killedara delivered the keynote address. Chennappa welcomed the gathering. Ramakrishna Gowda compered and Shantakumara Bajranthi proposed the vote of thanks.
