Karwar, Jul 2: It has come to light that a few persons infected with coronavirus have been receiving communication which say that huge compensation has been sanctioned to them. The police believe this to be an attempt of online fraud. They have registered a Suo Motu case and started investigation.
The infected persons often get emotionally drained. The fraudsters seem to be aiming at encashing their helplessness by promising to sanction COVID compensation amount. These messages are coming in the form of emails and SMS. Those who respond are asked to remit interest amount in advance. So far there are no reports of any frauds but as there is no such official scheme, senior police officials believe this to be the handiwork of cheaters.
Some of the infected persons from Uttara Kannada district have received emails and SMS in the name of World Health Organization. The people are informed that their names were picked through satellite and they will get 1.8 lac GBP. The letter bears the address of the sender as 102, Queens Road, London. Telephone number also has been provided. The name of the head of claims division has been mentioned as Barrister Jeff Hunter.
As identities of the infected people are kept a secret, it is surprising that these people are able to access the details. District superintendent of police, Shivaprakash Devaraju, said that the matter has been taken up for investigation.
