Man denied treatment, dies - Health minster issues show cause notice to 18 hospitals

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jul 1: It is learnt that a 52-year-old garment factory owner, who was suffering from acute breathing problems, went from one hospital to another seeking treatment. However, sadly, he did not get admission even after visiting 18 hospitals, and passed away. The incident happened on Sunday and the matter came to light with delay.

The man, who was fighting to breathe, visited these hospitals, telling them about his breathing difficulty and seeking treatment. But leading hospitals from the city turned him away, saying that they do not have spare beds.

B Sriramulu

Finally the man was subjected to a coronavirus test at the Rajajinagar hospital. From there, he was sent to Bowring Hospital. However, the man breathed his last before getting admitted into Bowring Hospital, it is gathered. It is as yet unknown whether he was suffering from coronavirus infection or not.

State minister for Health and Family Welfare & Backward Classes Welfare, B Sriramulu, in a tweet said, “Notice is served to several hospitals, based on the report that appeared in media, for denying treatment to a 52-year-old patient, who needed emergency medical attention.

"It is not only inhuman but also against the law to deny medical treatment during emergency giving lame excuses. During this Covid-19 pandemic, there is pressure on everyone. But I request the medical fraternity to respond suitably to the patients, who are in urgent need of medical assistance. I will not tolerate neglecting and denying medical assistance to patients siting any excuse,” the minister said the tweet.

Disgraceful for 18 hospitals to refuse to accept a patient with serious difficulty in breathing. Could they have not given initial treatment before refusing to admitting him?. Government should close the above hospitals immediately and a hefty fine should be imposed on them. Wrong people in medicine with no compassion and are there only to make money. Shame on you guys.

Sriramalu - Handling health Ministry is not an easy task for you and no one listen your voice unless you are a medical professional.
This Govt or any govt will not give any chance to any doctors to become health minister.

@Jossey - Suppose it was congress government, how do you think they would handle this situation. We need your wise advise. You are in Mumbai, how is the government in Maharashtra tackling Covid. Why are you bothered about Karnataka? First pull up Uddhav Thackeray and ask him questions regarding covid cases in your state, do you have the guts to do so?

We should not talk about "suppose" "if" and such options........ reasons being:

    1. "Suppose: : BJP was in power when the world Crude price was US$ 120/- and above - what would have been the cost of Petrol, Diesel and LPG in India?
    2. "Suppose": Congress was in power in Gujarat in 2002, would we have the Riots?
    3. "Suppose": BJP was in power in 1991-92, would we have been able to overcome the situation wherein the country had foreign reserves enough to sustain the economy for only 1 week?

there are many more to be answered..... so let us not get into "SUPPOSE"

    we should think WHAT NEXT?

    Dear Nancy Madam,
Toll free numbers are just to fool telling that authorities are giving a ear to your problems.
During demonitization there was a lot of problem where patients could not get discharged from hospitals because they were not able to withdraw cash more than Rs 6,000.
In newspaper toll free number was given, i tried calling for 2 days continuously but number was busy throughout.

    Yeddy,

    What happened is not acceptable....

Private or Government hospitals cannot deny a patient treatment if his/ her life is in danger....Even in US, emergency rooms in private hospital MUST treat a patient if he/she has health insurance or not...even if he /she is illegal resident...then too patient should be admitted and treated...in these cases US Government reimburses the private hospitals if patient cannot afford to pay....

Yeddy...your achievements will be judged by these incidents...not by your or your GURU's Bashaan's...

You need to appoint some physician like Sudhakar as Health Minister....you can make Sriramulu Mining Minnister....Last but not least can you please tell him shave his beard please....it looks like Gym for Viruses, Bacteria's and other Pathogens...

If a private doctor/hospital treats a patient and the patient is declared corona positive afterwards ,the doctor gets a notice and a case is registered against the doctor as it happened in Bantwal, if a doctor refuses, then also he gets a notice.Hope the guidelines are made clear so that patients or doctors do not suffer. If there are not enough beds, home treatment should be allowed esp. in the early stages, and mild cases, so that beds are available for those who really require them.

The doctor can provide emergency treatment and then refer him to a covid hospital... The doctor in bantwal did not refer her.. but now private hospitals can treat covid patients... But they have to be reported .

State Govt Should have verified whether these private hospitals have facilities to treat Covid 19 patient before publishing the list of private hospitals allowed to treat Covid 19 patients. List had some eye hospitals as well.

Based on this list the patient has checked on 18 hospital but none failed to admit him as they did not have either facilities or isolation spare beds.

Now you send show cause notice to hospitals instead case has to be filed against Health Ministry for showing negligence and not following proper procedures in selecting hospitals and misleading the public.

Issue of Show Cause Notice will not serve the purpose. Cancel the Licence immediately as these Private Hospitals don't have any ethics while charging.

A private hospital is a business. It does not have endless supply of revenue to meet its expenses.

That is the reason the Government must build/run sufficient numbers of Government hospitals.

But if the private hospitals are to assist...

... the Government needs to set proper procedures - in what condition the private hospital can/cannot refuse treatment, and how the hospital is paid if the patient cannot afford it, etc etc.
