Ballari viral video: Field team fired for dumping coronavirus victims

Ballari, Jul 1 (IANS): District administration has fired a health department field team for inhumanly handling and ruthlessly dumping eight Covid bodies in a pit, a video of which went viral, an official said on Tuesday.

"The entire field team involved has been disbanded and will be replaced by a new team trained by the head of the department, forensics, VIMS," Ballari Deputy Commissioner S.S. Nakul told IANS.

In the viral video, more than five men were seen mercilessly dumping large black bags containing the bodies into a freshly dug pit.

Screengrab from the viral video

No relatives of the deceased persons or any final rites were conducted at the deserted pit where some traffic noise and Kannada conversations among the dumpers could be heard.

Wearing full body suits in white and blue, the field team took out one body after another from a vehicle and threw them into the pit.

Another unidentified man, wearing a mask, gloves, white and blue half-sleeved t-shirt, dark trousers and wielding a mobile phone was also seen going to the other side of the pit as the dumping happened.

In the video, three bodies could be counted being dumped into the pit where a JCB excavator was also spotted nearby, which may have been used to dig the pit.

"A few videos have been circulating on social media since this morning, showing footage of burial procedures. It was found that the videos did belong to Ballari and comprised the burial of eight people who passed away after succumbing to Covid," confirmed Nakul.

The Deputy Commissioner said the district administration has been deeply upset and sorrowful over the incident and the manner in which the bodies were handled.

"The district administration condemns the disrespectful handling of the bodies while being lowered on to the ground by the field staff," he said.

Nakul stated that the Ballari district administration unconditionally apologises for the incident to the families of the departed in particular and the district's people in general.

Other than the dumping, he said the videos show that all other medical standard operating procedures have been followed, such as using body bags, lining and others.

On Monday, Ballari witnessed the highest number of Covid deaths in the southern state at six, taking the overall death toll to 29.

In the past 24 hours, 61 people have tested positive for the virus in the district.

In Uttar Pradesh in BJP rule under CM Yogi ,in an open truck, sent bodies of 26 migrant labourers killed in Auraiya accident, in plastic bags, placed on ice slabs that melted, along with those who were injured.
After CM Hemant Soren objected and an ambulance was then arranged.

The Karnataka BJP under CM Yedurappa is not far left behind following the 'Uttam Pradesh Model' hurting the souls of the pandemic. The grieving families are not even offered the condolence but this undignified way of disposal is the shame to the humanity.

The Bellary District Commissioner should be held accountable along with the ministry of District in-charge.

I request the Congress, JD(S),Communist and all the regional parties to take this matter serious and raise this issue. Henceforth make sure no Kanndiga regardless of his faith will see the dignified last rites.

Its very upsetting matter. Even I received this video through whatsapp yday.. Pls respect the dead person and have some mercy on them or else pls dont take such responsibility. Before taking any responsibility it should make clear to the person concerned to behave properly and show some humanity.

Govt must really think about allowing the relatives of the dead to accompany during the burial with all the protective gears which can be charged on the relatives. The practice of culture and civilisation is tested during the adversities. If we are trying to be saints at our comfort and worse than a pigs at the time of difficulty then lets start walking on four limbs.

    Mr. Shetty,

I don't think that it's the government that stops from relatives claiming bodies or attending last rites - it's the relatives who don't want to get anywhere near their Covid victim family members. You may have read that in Mumbai hospitals, unclaimed bodies are still on cots and the authorities don't know what to do with them because leaving them there till the relatives agree to take the remains away, new cases are piling up and are accommodated on the floors of the hospitals.

The government must undertake mass electrocution of human mortal remains than waiting for disputing family members to decide whether to accept of abandon their dead relatives. Send a notification of death, give a deadline say, 24 hours. Any body that cross this deadline and remains unclaimed should be sent to electrocution. This will save the time/trouble and manpower and especially the danger of decay.

Send the bill to the family, if they did not clear it, cease their bank accounts till needful done - no hobnobbing !

Why is anybody blaming these people at all ? We, the people of Mangaluru, were the reason for a dead body to be transported from one graveyard to another, from there to another until one was found to give last rites.

Hypocrites, don't say a word ! These people are paid for what they are doing, they have no reason to show humanity, they are just doing their duty. At-least they are burying the dead, not leaving it on the pavement to rot.

Who told that those bodies are of Sriramulu's Appa/Amma ????

Why can't people be responsible themselves ?? When a child is born its helpless, everything has to be done to it. When a human being dies also, the corpse is helpless. It can't walk to the grave all by itself, we the alive humans can do this much for them - can't we ?

How many of us would volunteer to do this kind of work? None, yet we sit at home and complain about workers who deal with the deadly disease.

If anyone had any empathy, they would help the alive people and animals right now, then wait for them to die to get a false sense of pride from a burial. Stupid humans will not wear masks, beat up the poor, and expect great deeds from grave diggers, go clean the clogged drains and mop your own houses before compalining about diginity. Diginity is for those who deserve it, not who want it because they can afford it.

You mean to say we cannot handle our closed one's dead bodies. I think you don't have family Bond and nothing knows about humanity. Learn and comment. If someone doesn't interested, he must not go to this. Comment a bit logically. I don't think they are forced to this job.

God forbid, if I or my family members die of this virus, this will be our fate. No final rites or any respect for the dead. We will be buried like animals without any regard to the sentiment of people whom we leave behind. There will be some eye wash by the administration, but, I expect more cruel things to emerge as the virus situation worsens. This act is very painful and humiliating.

You government department people have no humanity. Shedding only crocodile tears. You will do worse again and will never allow anyone to share videos.

Because of our substandard food, care & treatment; No one wants to get admitted in hospital even if get Coronavirus.

We can enter into our private hospitals, but never to our government hospitals. I thought it would be a fake video, but today i am truly disgusted.

Those who think about cows and protect, better get in to the field now to show their humanity.

The sad face of India is we won't come to the road for a good cause. We are backed by either party or religion and whatever our Head is guiding we would follow happily.

Is the callous attitude exhibited by the field staff the result of job security enjoyed by them? No value for human life- living or dead!
