Panaji, Feb 17: The Archdiocese of Goa deeply mourned the demise, occurred today at Dharwad, of Most Rev. Ignatius Lobo, former Bishop of Belgaum.

After serving as Secretary to Cardinal Valerian Gracias of Bombay and as the Director General of Caritas-India and even as the Vice-President of Caritas International for Asia and Oceania, he was appointed Bishop of Belgaum in 1968, succeeding Bishop Fortunato da Veiga Coutinho, after the latter’s untimely death in a road accident.

The Archdiocese of Goa has always received a most enthusiastic collaboration from Bishop Lobo, both while guiding the destinies of the neighbouring Diocese of Belgaum for 27 years, and, more particularly, after his retirement to his ancestral home in Siolim, where he stayed from 1995 to 2007.

Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao of Goa extended heartfelt sympathies to the Diocese of Belgaum, led today by Bishop Peter Machado, and to the bereaved family of Bishop Ignatius Lobo, praying that God may grant His faithful servant a well deserved eternal rest.
