Mangaluru: Bad connectivity, network issues galore in rural areas

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 23: Dakshina Kannada was hailed for telephone revolution in the 90s. But now, for every sundry change in the climate, people are sure about the snapping of the connectivity.

Most of the rural belts even now heavily lean on BSNL for telephone and internet connections. The district as a whole has 421 towers. Whenever power supply gets cut off, diesel generator back-ups and battery in most of these towers do not work.

BSNL faces an acute shortage of manpower and finance and therefore it is facing issues. Resultantly, whenever the power supply gets snapped, the network goes dead.

Revenue

Even though the revenue department has a wireless system, it is as good as being non-existent because of improper maintenance. An official of the department confesses that its repeater is located at Karinjeshwara, Bantwal Taluk, but laments that it has rarely functioned.

The repeater can have jurisdiction up to about 25 km radius. It is not possible to connect villages because of this restriction. Even the officials and other staff rushing for emergency assistance run the risk of losing connectivity, he stated.

Satellite phone

One satellite phone has been provided to the district to establish connectivity when all other networks go off. As only one phone is available, internal communication is becoming very difficult. T N Sathish of Malnad Hitarakshna Vedike says that network problem has been plaguing all the departments, not only in case of natural disasters. Even government ration, works of other departments etc suffer on account of a network problem, which has emerged as a major deterrent, he added.

A landslide took place at Didupe, Beltangady taluk, during last year. Because of a network problem, rescue operation had suffered initially. As it is a rural area, there are no private mobile operator services here. The power supply was suspended at that time, and as usual, BSNL towers were not working. Even landlines which the people had in the past, were found to be non-existent as people have switched over to mobile phones.

Wireless

At present, only the police wireless system has been functioning properly in Dakshina Kannada district. Even though there are base stations in every police station, its range is only about 100 meters. So it is not practical in interior areas. The anti-Naxal force has a Bolero 4x4 vehicle fitted with a mobile repeater. This has network and GPS with the capacity to work for 25 km. This is the only reliable network here now.

District superintendent of police, Laxmi Prasad, said that technical problems are encountered in most of the rescue operations. He said that the network ‘blackspot’ survey was conducted and a report was filed. He said that a proposal has been sent to convert police wireless into digital. He recalled that at the Natural Disaster Monitoring Committee meeting too, the need to provide backup support for BSNL towers was raised.

When there is connectivity problems in the city itself, how can anyone expect good connectivity in the villages?
Moreover villagers have been looted by telecom operators without providing them a talktime pack. Villagers mostly use their phones only to talk, but there is no pack for them, they didn't get benefitted from the telecom revolution since 2017.
They didn't get unlimited talktime benefit till now.

Even in Mangalore city many landlines and broadband connections are not working because of cable fault.BSNL people say that MCC does not allow digging of roads for correction of cable faults, but there should be a solution. No ducts were placed while concreting roads and most of the roads are already dug up a number of times, faulty planning has caused misery to citizens of Mangalore.

Stop giving free voice calls and free data. How telecom companies will do maintenance, pay salary of employees, high spectrum prices and importing experience telecom equipments if there is no revenue?

Two state subsidiary of BSNL and MTNL at the mercy of Reliance owned by Ambani's. Once the best service provider in India their employees are cashless due to unpaid salaries ever since PM Modi's government came to power.

Most of the experience and qualified staff are lured with higher salaries to work for Reliance. Those who are rejected the offer are asked to take voluntary retirement. Now the company is run by contract workers who can hardly understand English nor have technical expertise.

The BJP and his Andh Bhaktha's are asking boycott China. But none of them support the state subsidiaries. Every state owned company fate is same as once household brand of India's HMT watches. These state subsidiaries are kept in ICU to be taken over private telecom companies who funds BJP in elections.

This is the reality of the 'Digital India' under PM Modi ruled digital India that our rural India is suffering.

The root cause of this problem is as follows:
Only Reliance Jio was given 5G License.
MTNL & BSNL were left to die.
Reliance Jio finds it not viable to give service in Rural Areas.
Government is the root cause of all these Blunders ...

No private telecom operators want to service rural villages as it not economical. B.S.N.L which was providing both landline and cellular ( mobile) phone services all over India was made to bleed by successive governments to help private telecom operators. During crisis we realize importance of BSNL landline phones. This Central government has given contract of govt employees mobile to jeo.

Disasters can be at our doorstep anytime, be it natural or man-made. Basic connectivity in this day and age when 5G connections are rising, we fail to have proper 2G connections in rural areas for a simple voice call! Time to introspect and work on our drawbacks for a better and safer tomorrow. Thank you Daijiworld for shedding light on this ground reality!

Guess there is no point blaming BSNL, if you read some of their articles on how they were refused funding by the government, so that private operators can benefit, as you have rightly pointed out that one of it is Finance.
BSNL at least has the courtesy to put up connections, where the private operators dont even want to go, as they dont foresee much profit in those areas.
However, please note that even the private operators connectivity is poor too. Most of the places in Mangalore, 4G practically refuses to operate, and we need to set it to 3G on the phones.
Hope to see better connectivity in the days ahead. Jai Hind.
