Mangaluru, Jun 23: A defamation suit seeking compensation of five crore rupees has been filed against a person who reportedly took to social media to pass derogatory remarks about Mangaluru south MLA, Vedavyas Kamath.

The MLA has sought compensation of five crore rupees for a contemptuous campaign against him. A petition which also sought staying of malicious campaign against Kamath had been filed in the first senior sessions court here last week. The court, which took the petition on record, y Sunil Bajilkeri from making libellous propaganda against Kamath in social media.

Advocate M Chidananda Kedilaya,who presented arguments on behalf of the MLA in the court, said that the city - based Sunil Bajilkeri had been sharing posts regularly against the MLA. Therefore the court was approached to stop the malicious campaign and to pay compensation for the loss of reputation. He said that Sunil Bajilkeri has to either provide documentary proof for the allegations or pay compensation.

    Let this set an example. Social media is being used without caution or care. People need to understand that indecent behaviour even on social media is still indecent behaviour. Cannot sit behind the screen and type or share undignified, derogatory or hurtful posts or statement or articles. Social media etiquette needs to be in place, just like it is in person.
