Hassan: Yettinahole may remain a mirage, crores of rupees might go waste

Daijiworld Media Network - Hassan (SP)

Hassan, Jun 23: The Yettinahole project is an ambitious project for the Karnataka government which plans to bring water from Yettinahole rivulet to districts in the plains like Bengaluru rural, Ramanagara, Chikkaballapur, Tumakuru and Kolar districts. The project was started when Siddaramaiah was the chief minister and the people in the plains have been waiting for water to arrive. While the government claims that they will get 24 tmc of water from the project, the Indian Institute of Science scientists had predicted that it might generate only 8 tmc of water. Nowhere else in the state such lift irrigation projects have succeeded. The project therefore, many say, is set to be doomed.

The project work undertaken in Sakleshlpur taluk of the district is not even 40 percent complete. The government says 85 percent work has been completed. Hassan district in-charge minister Gopalaiah, conducted scrutiny of the project site. He checked the water lifting machine and got details from officials. The minister said that water will start flowing by March 2021. Project pipeline of 152 km has been laid. Scientists have said that if it rains well, the project will get 24 tmc water.

But a look at the project reveals that even after ten years the project may not be completed. Although over Rs 3,000 crore has been spent so far, the project appears to be heading towards being the one that can be milked by successive governments to make money.

The facts which contribute to this gloomy prediction are that 1. No lift irrigation systems have succeeded in Karnataka. 2. Actual water generation is only 8 tmc. 3. The rivers and streams feeding the rivulet have been destroyed. 4. Even though three governments have changed, the project has not progressed. The government had promised to feed water four years back. 5. It is not possible to lift water by over 200 feet. 6. This requires 220 watt power. 7. Actually so much water can be bought instead of spending on the project.

The project was started with an estimate of Rs 13,000 crore. As per the revised S R value, the cost will go up steeply. The work has suffered on account of coronavirus pandemic and workers availability has suffered. Machinery fixing has been completed 95 percent. As much as 3.5 acres of additional land is yet to be acquired. Pipeline work is also expected to be completed soon.

Several district in-charge ministers have changed but the project has not yielded water so far. The project looks like a mirage. Whether the project will be completed and whether it will provide water to the thirsty districts to the extent projected is a guess no one is able to make as of now.

Stop challenging the God's creation. In Untied States many dams has been demolished to revive nature. Our nation to take the lesson from 'Aral Sea' that dried due two diversion of two rivers.

It is better we think how to harvest rain water that seeps into oceans. Given new life to lakes, ponds and dried wells. Create stop check dams like Keyans with sand bunds.

I think we Kanndigas need to learn more from water starved Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu rather than spending billions destroying our own eco-system.

With the same money if they had undertaken water harvesting schemes in those 'dry' districts they would have got motor water and projects would have been over by now. Those places get upto 1000mm raqin per year.

This project will completely destroy the breeding pattern of water creatures living on the downstream. These creatures have been living in the downstream for thousands of years undisturbed. When the water flow is disturbed in the name of feeding the thirsty people , hungry people and vote bank hungry politicians , the ecology is completely disturbed.

If one has visited the prestine nature in the vicinity of this project you clearly feel that we have been completely disturbing the ecology of mother nature. Nature will rebel in one form or the other to balance out the forces of nature......just the matter of time.

The great manthri's of Mangalore from Cong and BJP also used this project to fight elections in places like chikballapur, indirectly these manthri's were trading votes for Mother nature. .....bad as politics can get. Mangalore's future is doomed with Manthri's like these.

Please re-check the facts,, if the project requires 220 Watts of power then you can power up the project through a home inverter and car battery.....as per my calculation to get 24 tmcft water in a year at the rate of 76700 cubic meter flow per hour at 200 feet lift , you will require minimum 23 Mega Watts or 23000000 Watts of electricity. If you want to get an idea of how much that means then count this ....an average size power station like Udupi Power plant in Padubidri is of the size of 1200 Mega Watts so this is approximately 2% of the power station capacity. If you want to further pump it to long distance then this power would roughly turn to be around 40 Mega Watts.

Is it not tax payers money the Govt. is spending? Estimated cost is Rs13,000 crores. if the project work is going like snails pace difinitely the cost would be doubled. So speed up the work and serve its purpose.

Crores of Rupees spending is our (Public) money, which was received from Tax. Government should have started the projects like converting the Sea water into sweet water, which would have been a successful by providing good employment jobs for the coastal people. In GCC countries these projects are fully successful. But in Karnataka, it looks like mass destruction of Natural forest resources resulting landslides in some districts.
Governments should advice and educate all our youth citizens for rain water harvesting projects, subsistence agriculture, Solar energy projects and the importance for our and future generation. All the Government buildings, Government employees and political leaders should first start initially. Tax exemption should also be provided to promote the citizens.
