Bengaluru, Jun 20 (IANS): Contacts of earlier cases outnumbered domestic returnees as Karnataka reported a record 416 Covid-19 cases, taking the state's tally to 8,697, while nine persons succumbed to the virus, an official said on Saturday.
"New cases reported from Friday 5 p.m. to Saturday 5 p.m. 416," said a health official.
As many as 196 contacts of earlier cases contracted the virus, constituting 47 per cent of the cases. Unlike before, returnees accounted for 115 or 28 per cent of the cases, majority of them from Maharashtra. There were also 22 cases with international travel history to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Meanwhile, nine people succumbed to the virus, three in Bengaluru Urban, two in Bidar and one each in Davangere and Chikkamagaluru.
On Saturday, Covid cases spiked in Bengaluru Urban, Bidar, Ballari, Ramanagara, Kalaburagi, Mysuru, Hassan, Raichur, Udupi, Haveri, Vijayapura, Chikkamagaluru, Dharwad and Chikkaballapura.
Among the new cases, Bengaluru Urban reported 94 cases, followed by Bidar (73), Ballari and Ramanagara (38 each), Kalaburagi (34), Mysuru (22), Hassan (16), Raichur (15), Udupi (13), Haveri (12), Vijayapura (9), Chikkamagaluru (8), Dharwad and Chikkaballapura (5 each), Dakshina Kannada, Mandya, Uttara Kannada, Kolar and Bengaluru Rural (4 each), Davangere (3), Bagalkote, Shivamogga, Gadag and Tumkur ( 2 each) and Belagavi and Chamarajanagar (1 each).
As many as 44 patients are suffering from Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and 19 from Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI).
On a positive note, 181 people got discharged, raising the total discharges to 5,391.
Currently, Bengaluru Urban is leading the state's Covid-19 burden with 621 active cases, followed by Kalaburagi (461), Ballari (302), Dakshina Kannada (209) and Bidar (205) among others.
In all, 4.93 lakh samples have been tested so far, of which 4.73 lakh have returned negative.
Bengaluru Urban has accounted for 61 deaths, followed by Bidar (13), Kalaburagi (11 each), Vijayapura and Davangere (7 each) and Dakshina Kannada (6 each), among others.
