Mangaluru, Jun 18: Scores of people have lost jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many companies have removed people from their payrolls in order to reduce the workforce. Now the state government has invited applications from eligible candidates for many vacancies under the NAREGA scheme. People who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic are queuing up for these jobs.
Face-to-face interview call was given to candidates for 13 outsourced positions in the city. Over hundreds of people from different parts of the state had arrived in the city seeking jobs. Applications were invited under the NAREGA scheme, for two positions of MIS coordinator, seven posts of taluk IEC coordinators, two posts of taluk technical coordinators and two positions of data entry operators.
More than 900 people had arrived on Thursday, June 18 to the campus of zilla panchayat. It was difficult for officials to maintain social distancing. However, thermal screening was done at the main entrance of the zilla panchayat office itself. Later, the aspirants were sent one by one into the auditorium for the interview.
Job aspirants had arrived from Udupi, Kasargod, Chikkamagaluru, Tumakuru and Chitradurga districts apart from Dakshina Kannada. Women also arrived in large numbers. Most of the job aspirants were those who had lost their jobs in the city and had gone to their native places during the lockdown.
One of the aspirants of Bantwal origin said, "I was employed in a private company in Bengaluru. I had come to my native place during lockdown after which I was removed from the payroll of my company. I am not worried about the salary but the job is important."
