Bengaluru, Jun 18: The Yalahanka police here received a complaint on honeytrapping. The complainant, who happens to be a doctor, alleged that he is a victim of honeytrap tactics of a gang determined to fleece him to the extent of ten lac rupees.
It is said that a lady befriended the doctor on Facebook. On her invitation, he says he joined her for dinner on June 13. "After our meal at the hotel on the airport road at around 11 pm, we were on our way back when two young men intercepted us. They claimed to be intelligence officials and demanded money. They also blackmailed me by showing a few photos. After I informed them that I did not have money, they took away Rs 5,000 cash which I had in my purse. They have now threatened me with publishing the photos in social media unless I pay ten lac rupees," the doctor stated.
The Yalahanka police are probing into the matter. There has been an increase in the number of cases in which social media is used to extort money from gullible people and there is a need for the people to be careful about befriending people they come to know on social media who they do not know personally or through any other means.
