Mangaluru: District administration observes 'Mask Day' to raise COVID-19 awareness

Mangaluru, Jun 18: The Dakshina Kannada district administration observed 'Mask Day' here at the deputy commissioner’s office on Thursday, June 18.

Speaking on the occasion the district deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said, "The district administration is observing 'Mask Day' to create public awareness of the importance of wearing a mask during this pandemic. The relaxation in lockdown does not mean that coronavirus has eradicated. We have to be careful and compulsorily wear a mask whenever we step out."

Earlier on Wednesday, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) commissioner had stated that the state government issued an order wherein Thursday, would be Mask Day as a means to create awareness amid corona pandemic. "Karnataka government will observe Thursday as Mask Day to create awareness on wearing a mask," said (BBMP) commissioner BH Anil Kumar.

BBMP marshals and staff were also seen sharing pamphlets to pedestrians and motorists about precautions to be taken to prevent coronavirus infections. It included urging people to wear a mask and forbidding spitting in the public.

Meanwhile, the civic body is also penalizing people for not wearing a mask by fining them.

Additional deputy commissioner M J Roopa and others were present for the occasion.
