Mangaluru: Stay order issued on setting up of makeshift shops at Nehru Maidan

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 18: The state high court has issued stay order against the ongoing construction of vegetables and meat market in the football stadium at Nehru Maidan in the city.

These shops are being built to temporarily accommodate retail sellers affected by the proposed demolition and reconstruction of the central market building.

Eleven citizens including Vijay Suvarna, Mohammed Hussain, and Anthony Sebastian Fernandes, had filed public interest litigation in the state high court, challenging the above construction. They are of the opinion that the constructions are illegal.

When the litigation came up for hearing before a division bench of the high court comprising Chief Justice A S Oka and Justice Nataraj on Wednesday, the bench issued stay order.

Nehru Maidan is exclusively for sports and entertainments. It should not be messed up with these types of construction activities. MCC shoul find some other places for the aforesaid purpose.

Although I am not Mangalorean by birth but having a root in Mangalore and stays in Mangalore for the past several years and I love Mangalore. I welcome the stay order issued by High court on setting up of makeshift shops at Nehru Maidan.I myself object the setting up of makeshift shops at the said place as it was gifted free by some like minded Britto family as per the source for the use of playground, holding some rallies, religious functions exhibitions and recreations etc.
Besides this is the only beautiful and very well established landmark for the newcomers and even to the Mangaloreans available heart of the city.Damaging, spoiling such a beautiful ground for the sake of some unwanted needs by the concerned authorities will give a bad repute to the Mangalore.
Well,as far as small scale traders, petty shop owners and business people are concerned,it is truly their right to fight for their survival as they depend only on their small earnings for their livelihood.Concerned authorities should have taken proper decision and applied their mind before asking these business people to move out from central market to APMC,Bykampadi during covid-19 lock down period and provided them with proper alternatives. This was done in hurry.Hence the impact.

No building can be constructed in Nehru Maidan. It was a land donated by the Britto family of Mangalore in a condition that it is only for playing and entertainment purposes, not for any government building. Government and Corporation of Mangalore must find another place for any construction. Please save our Maidan. Everyone please stand against the construction of any sought of building in the Maidan.

    We need a better Mangalore.
Central market should be demolished and new one has to be constructed. The vendors can shift to APMC till then.
And the Central maidan or Kendra Maidan is the pride of Mangaloreans and no one can touch it.

Nehru maidan is pride of Mangalore. Almost every native of Mangalore has used this place for some kind of sport or the other in his life. This is the only space available for youth of Mangalore for sports events within city. Do not spoil this by having markets, political gatherings etc.

" MANGANA KAIYALI MANKIYA" MCC don't know what they are doing. They never refer the records of Nehru Maidan. This Urva market is laying idle since more than one year. Why can't they shieft those business people, ???. This is just to give trouble to sports lovers. Or construct small sheds in Mangal Stadium. This is also alternative to Nehru Maidan.

Shankar, it takes great generosity and philanthropy to donate that much land. People today fight for a small tract of land. So instead appreciate the family's good cause.

During the lockdown period the old central market should have been refurbished.RCC pillars and a RCC roof constructed on the pillars. Then a multistoried new structure constructed on the pillars. The vendors could have continued business in the refurbished structure until the multisoried structure is completed, and then they should be shifted to the new structure on top.. After that the old structure cold have been converted to. G+1 parking..
Instead now the vendors who have been doing business for the last many years are being treated like football, shifting to the football ground shows the intention of the authorities.

Congrats Amar Akbar Anthony. You all doing great Job. Nehru Maidan is not for constructing Markets. It is not even govt. Property. This Maidan was donated by a good citizen just for sports facility. Once the temporary market starts then there will be lot of dirt vehicles, dust will be there.
