Puttur: Intoxicated man killed by sons during fight

Puttur, Jun 16: In an incident which happened at around midnight on Sunday, June 14, a man who was drunk and became uncontrollable was allegedly killed by his sons. The macabre incident happened at Anapalla at Melina Mugga in Karaya village near Uppinangady.

The deceased has been identified as Dharnappa alias Koragappa Poojary (61), a local. His sons Monappa Poojary (34) and Naveen (30), have been accused of killing Dharnappa by repeatedly hitting him with a sickle and the stem of areca nut frond.

Dharnappa used to eke out a living by toddy tapping and also working as a coolie in his spare time. He was generally a good-natured, well-behaved man. It is said that when drunk, he used to torture his family members. His three daughters and two sons were living separately. Dharnappa's brother lives next to Dharnappa's residence. On Sunday, Tambila service for the family Daivas had been arranged there and all the five children had arrived at Dharnappa's house to participate in the religious procedures.

When the children were on a visit, Dharnappa reportedly fought with them and was about to attack them with a sickle, at which the children fought back and allegedly killed their father.

Deputy superintendent of police Dinakar Shetty, Puttur rural police circle inspector Nagesh Kadri, Uppinangady police sub-inspector Erayya and team visited the spot. On the basis of a complaint filed by Rajeevi, daughter of Dharnappa, they registered a case and arrested the accused.
