'Slumdog Millionaire' Worst Film I have Seen, says Karnad

Panaji, Feb 8 (IANS) Padma Bhushan awardee and Jnanpith award winner Girish Karnad Monday called "Slumdog Millionaire" the worst film he has ever seen.

Karnad, a towering, multi-faceted creative personality in the field of theatre, literature, acting and academics, was speaking at a lecture on 'Colonialism and Culture' at the D.D. Kosambi lecture series, organised by the government of Goa in Panaji.

"I have never seen anything worse than 'Slumdog Millionaire'," Karnad said during a question-answer session which followed his lecture.

He also said the movie had completely failed in India. India's hunger for Oscars showed "our own inferiority complex", he added.

"I don't know why we are obsessed with the Oscars or the Grammy (Grammy awards)," Karnad said, adding that the Indian film industry was perfectly healthy in every sense of the word.

Released in 2008, Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" swept the 81st Academy Awards by winning eight Oscars. Out of the eight awards, three were won by Indian artistes - Resul Pookutty, A.R. Rehman and Gulzar.

Yes, SDM has shown India in poor light. But are we ignoring the fact? See how many people are homeless, poverty stricken and hardly get 1 meal a day. I did like the picturisation and how the story evolved. Even my Brit colleagues asked me how the movie was? I said, it was great, but not as worthy as Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the movie which was nominated for Oscars the same year.

Guys, watch that movie. It is worth each penny you pay for the ticket or DVD. I haven't seen any movie like this before. Secondly, we cannot say many movies are better than these Hollywood flicks. This Oscar is meant for Hollywood movies and not for Bollywood. Afterall Bollywood awards are meant only for Yash Raj / Karan Johar films !!

After all the film revealed the truth that the poor people need to be taken care. After knowing what our Government took action? Even Mother Theresa served the people Hindus accused her of converting! You do not want to reveal the truth to the out side word because you feel shame! And you don’t want other to serve them and bring them out of it you are quick to accuse them with religious beams. What exactly you are talking about?

Do you involve your comment for time pass or take attention of the people? You know people in the slum need helping hand go and do it, if not allow others to do it! Our leaders are busy with changing the names of the places Mangalore - Mangaluru, Bangalore - Bengaluru, Boluru, Kuluru, Beluru, Shiruru, and than? Make every name ended with ru and in Maharastra - Mumbai, Lambai, Chaudai, and at last Kambai, bai, bai!

I watched this movie in Sharjah .There were only 10 people. But when film started 3 local ladies ran away when they saw horrible scene (boy jumping into shit well to see Amitabh ).So only 7 people watched Slumdog in a beautiful theatre. It was quite a embarassing moment for me becuase I was the only one Indian. Yes..Movie is showing negative side of India. Anyway it is a reality. You have to accept it. Had it been directed by Indian,it would not have won Oscar.

That is also 100% reality.Amair Khan's Lagaan, Sanjay Leela's Devdas and Satyajith Ray's many movies were better than this Slumdog. A.R.Rahaman's music in Roja is thousand times better than JAI HO. I can bet with OSCAR officials that Malayalam Director Adoor Gopalkrishnan's/Haiharan's movies will be NO.1 if they accept Malayalm movie ! Thats why Big B,Amitabh Bachhan has finally decideD to act in Malaylam movie (Directed by Major Ravi ). Just wait and see. So there is nothing wrong in Mr.Karnad's comments.

Harold, please see the movie once again and watch Salaam Bombay - you would know the difference. It is always seen that when a British or American makes movies in Inida, they tend to get more mileage than if an India made the same movie. the only silver lining in Slumdog was the music and lyrics, rest be it acting, storyline, screenplay was all not worthy of an award. Secondly Karnads comment wasd right in saying as to why are we running after European awards - have you ever seen any Englishan wanting A Filmfare, Zee, Star plus or Stardust awards. It just goes to say that we give them too much priority

In their eagerness to get world recognition film makers and writers are competing with each other, to present poverty here in their film and books. Slumdog millionaire and Adiga`s prize winning book is good example. These movie makers do not find the achievement of India in the field of IT, science, agriculture and industry attractive. Because Oscar Award organisers want to see the poverty in India. And we are obliging them. What a tragedy!

Padma Bhushan awardee and Jnanpith award winner Girish may not have experienced what is hunger and poverty. If he ever lived one wk with the slums in Bombay or any part of India, he will understand their agony and poverty. Is the board which awarded Oscar to 'Slum dog Millionaire' are not qualified or are we have enough qualities to qualify them what they are doing. 'Slum dog Millionaire' is great movie not because it has received Oscar award.

This movie conveys message to every forsaken, discarded, poor, under privileged child that there is hope and u too are wanted in this society. This message of every child has qualities and talents & what requires for the child is support, encouragement not exploitation. Then the world will become better.

For once, I fully agree Nagesh Mamu and ofcourse mr.Karnad. It depends what perspective you watch a movie. No doubt it is a wellmade movie. And so is Adiga's white tiger which won the Booker prize. The central theme of both is similar poverty, corruption, manipulation and how a person comes out "victorious" so to say, the least. It is not about confronting the poverty or corruption but exalting these plagues that are prelevant in Indian Society. It is simply India bashing...

Corruption in American society will not win an oscar.. watch "Wild Orchid".. but India bashing always a sure winner. I think, Mr.Karnad who made Chomana Dudi.. knows what he is speaking...We should not as Indians covet awards at the cost of India's prestige as a nation...It is a poor nation still.. but let us win awards for glorifying its acheivements, its culture, and its forebearance..

Girish Karnad is right because he loves India. When my collegues said Slumdog Millianaire is very good film I was surprized, so I went to see it. After seeing that film I said we have better films than that film. I liked the music which was excellent, childrens' act was excellant, and to see the curiousity of Big B is natural. Since I love India I would not like to see these things in a commercial film, if it was a documentary film I would agree. AR, Gulzar and Mr. Pookutty should come forward and give their profit from this film and help those people in slums.

But honestly they made this film with the help of PIRANGEE for their selfishnes and not to give as we read in our history books. Now the history repeated with the help of Gulzar and Pookutty selling India to Americans for their selfishness. If Indian producer comes and produces a film on American social/cultural life surely the film will get Indian Filmfare awards. But I don't think the Indian producer will get people like Gulzar and Pookutty to sell America.

Comments by Deepak and Sonia make sense. This film was awarded the best film for three reasons : 1.India was shown in a negative perspective - it is a well known fact that whenever the negative aspects of India was shown , it appeals to the western side faster. 2)Technically good movie. 3)Produced and directed by a westerner and marketed well internationally. Now, as Girish Karnad said - is it the worst film? I don't agree , I suggest Karnad to re-visit some of his own movies. I don't have to mention that he is a open gay supporter and definitely his personal beliefs would have reflected in his movies.

Whenever our films show the greatness of India and its people, they hardly get into the entry for the award. The film created so much bad image of the country to the outside world and every person who has watched the film thinks that way unless they have travelled to India and experienced the greatness of its culture and diversity.
