Karnataka mulls caste, income certificates to Brahmins

Bengaluru, Jun 11 (IANS): The Karnataka government is mulling to issue caste and income certificates to Brahmins though they are in a minority, accounting a mere three per cent of the southern state's seven crore population, an official said on Thursday.

"Though Brahmins are in a 'minority' in terms of their population across the state, they need caste and income certificates to benefit from the welfare schemes as in the case of the SC, ST and OBC groups," an official told IANS here.

The Karnataka State Brahmin Development Board was set up in March 2019 as a state-run company with Rs 5 crore authorized capital and Rs 5 crore equity and is registered with the Registrar of Companies.

"The Board has petitioned the state government to implement the 10 per cent quota for the economically weaker sections, as its benefit is being given by the central government jobs and in admissions to the national educational institutions," said its chairman H S Sachidananda Murthy.

Responding to the demand, state chief minister B S Yediyurappa said the state government would consider issuing caste certificates to the Brahmins so that they too can benefit from the state's various welfare schemes.

"Though Brahmins belong to the forward community, they are economically weaker and need financial support," said Yediyurappa on Wednesday after unveiling the Board's official website for all its stakeholders here.

Brahmins whose gross annual family income is less than Rs 8 lac per annum will be eligible for the benefit schemes.

"The Board will soon be authorised to issue caste and income certificates to the members of the Brahmin community so that they can also benefit from the schemes," said the chief minister on the occasion.

Noting that every community has people who are forward and backward economically for various, including historical reasons, Yediyurappa said the Board would be empowered to serve the Brahmins.

"The Board also proposes to provide interest-free loans to the financially weaker sections of the people in the Brahmin community," added Murthy.

The community members urged the Chief Minister to provide 10 per cent of the state government jobs and seats in state-run educational institutions, including professional colleges.

We have to change with the times. Government policies issued decades back worked for that era - policies need to be amended for the current and future generation.

Personally I feel the system of welfare and reservation for minorities and backward classes worked for those times. There are many minorities and backward class people who have good income and wealth but still misuse the welfare and reservation policies when it comes to rations, education, scholarships, house allotments, bank credit, jobs etc - this needs to STOP.

People need to taught how to catch a fish instead of providing them with one. The new mantra should be to uplift all poor citizens irrespective of class, caste, religion onto the middle class category. Its sad that when the government starts a plan, it fails to follow through with course-correction at every stage.

The current generation of Brahmins, just like current whites in USA, should not be help responsible for casteism/racism if they dont practice it now, unlike their ancestors. Some Brahmins are stricken by poverty these days. Income certificate would have helped them.

Shivalli, Havyaka, GSB (Hindu), GSB (Catholic), Tamil/Malayalee/Bengali/Marathi Brahmins residing in Karnataka...

That is quite a few Brahmins.

If the offer is good, more from the neighbouring states might migrate to Karnataka.

Casteism is the evil practice in the society. Lower caste people are considered slaves of upper caste and reports are still emerging on daily basis of attrocities against them. Every holy scripture of respective religion should treat their followers equally.

True, the self-appointed "leaders" of religions/beliefs/faths have caused a lot of havoc.

However, there is nothing stopping the oppressed people (followers, in this case) to start their own religion...

...or become agnostics, atheists, etc etc.

Ur argument is like "thola and kurimari nyaaya" even we beleive what you mentioned true for argument sake who divided the society? The present generation is already 73 years as after Independence all r equal. If your argument the Christians during Portuguese era or Muslims during Nizam era forcibly converted or tortured Hindus. So we have to punish the present generation of that community?
