Panaji, February 5: “Konkani language is a fundamental element of Goan identity and unites all Goans irrespective of religion and lifestyle”, said commissioner for NRI Affairs, Eduardo Faleiro.
He was speaking as a chief guest at a function organized by the Goa Konkani Academy to commemorate the Official Language Day.
Faleiro opined that the survival of Konkani is essential for preservation of the Goan identity in future. Comparatively there are small numbers of Konkani speaking people. Most of them use English, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam or other languages in their daily conversation which the mother tongue cannot be developed, he added.
Faleiro further said that a necessary prerequisite for the survival of the Konkani language is harmony among Konkani writers in different scripts. All incentives available to the writers in Devanagri script including awards of the Sahitya Academy, representation in literary bodies and financial assistance should also be available to writers of Roman script. School education, however, should be in the Devanagri script, he insisted.
Fr Feroz Fernandes, chief editor of Vavraddeancho Ixtt and Prakash Kamat, special correspondent, The Hindu explained the significance of Official Language Day. Kamat said that official language policy should be based on encouragement and motivation. However, apart from issuing few notifications nothing has been done to implement the policy. Government should make facilities to communicate with the public in the official language which will benefit both, he added.
Fulam ani Kantte and Jawan, the tiatrs written by late Prem Kumar, a renowned tiatrist and brought out by the Konkani Academy were released on the occasion. President of Goa Tiatr Academy, Tomazinho Cardozo briefed about the book.
President of Goa Konkani Academy, N Shivdas favouored Konkani as medium of instruction at the primary level. He urged all the konkanas to forget all the differences and come together for united progress of the language.
