Mangaluru: Vegetable traders bid to resume business at central market thwarted

Mangaluru, Jun 9: Vegetable wholesalers and retailers who had shifted business sometime back to Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) yard at Baikampady from the central market building here under pressure from the officials, tried to reopen the central market and conduct business on Tuesday June 9 morning.

As the officials thwarted them, there was verbal friction between the two sides. The city corporation had ordered to close the central market as it plans to build a modern market complex in its place. It had closed down the market on April 7.

As many as 151 wholesalers and 30 retailers dealing in fruits and vegetables had been shifted from here on April 7. These businessmen came back to the central market on Tuesday and forcibly tried to restart their businesses here in violation of the city corporation's order.

Police were present in large numbers near the market as the vegetable traders had informed of their intention to shift here in advance. City corporation commissioner warned of taking legal action if the traders opened their businesses here. He also warned that the licences issued to all the merchants would be revoked if they violate law. The city corporation is hell bent on not allowing the market to be reopened.

The Central Market Merchants Association has been claiming that the court has stayed shifting of the market and hence they are eligible to resume business here. This claim has been dismissed by the city corporation officials. The businessmen also accuse the district administration of not providing any facilities at the APMC yard Baikampady.

The district administration and city corporation have been resisting effort by the traders to return to the central market. The entire area around the market has been sealed with the huge presence of the police. The merchants who have come together in front of the town hall and the footpath have been protesting against the city corporation and district administration for foiling their efforts to resume business here.

Law should be followed. Once it is decided to shift shift and don't allow any body to enter the market. Just put sec144 if resisted just shoot at sight within no time crowd will vanish. Every where law is not followed just give warning max twice then shoot at sight automatically everything will fall in line

May be you have to suffer without food at that time you might remember this market. Only promises are made by politicians to build new market and blah blah whereas work has not started. The market that's there in APMC is provided by government and it's too far from city and farmers are facing a huge loss to transport their goods there. wholesalers and retailers cannot sell their goods there as it's out of city limits. Go and visit APMC market once you will get all sort of diseases it's that well maintained. Please do think before making comments.

Am one of the oldest residents of Hampankatta, Mangaluru and have been visiting the market building since its inception. The present situation o0f the building since 2011. Live wires are hanging open. Ive seen APMC yard in baikampady. It has goid infrastructure. The vegetable vendors can take up shop indoors in the building wgich is string and clean. There is ample car parking facility. The fact is many street vendors dont want to pay rentals. They pay hafta to some politicians to run business on the road. These people who are used to dubious ways of conducting business now are being set right. With help of their political masters who in earlier government ate up all money which was sanctioned earlier for old central market building are supporting these illegal vendors and this unlawful uprising is a political stunt. Reason is once all traders shift to baikampady the corrupt politicians don't get money anymore. No. 2 Question into petition raised im high court of Karnataka as to what happened to funds alloted by state government for uplifting the old central market since 1993 until 2011, which was pocketed by politicians, such crooked politicians who ate up these funds will be made to pay back with interest to the government. Thus these fake protests are created by the corrupt politicians through their benami traders, nothing else.

I suggest for time being shift the market to Urva new market MCC complex, which is vacant from last one year. After construction of new buildings, market can be shifted. I think there's a pressure from surrounding shops and encouraging these business people not to shift because they may lose their business.

I was a regular visitor here on alternate days to buy vegetables and fruits for my own consumption. I can list out the problems I faced:
1.I cannot visit this place with my vehicle before 9-30 AM as there is no car parking space as trucks would occupy.

2.After 9-30 AM, the whole salers would stack their items on road-side to avoid other vehicles parking in front of their shops, especially between Rupavani theater, old market and the market building.

3.after 10-30 AM, Traders would park their vehicles all around the market, so absolutely no space for parking.

    4. By this time, all fresh items would be purchased by the canteen, hotel and catering guys, leaving us the leftovers.

    5. The retailers, would hard-sell their product to gullible buyers at cheap rates.

The day, this market closed, i ventured into other markets, where items are cheap, fresh and more importantly, vendors are co-operative.

This market has a political lobby working, with many adjustments and pagdi system in place. The licencees are not the real vendors but many benamis are running the show.

It's time we change things for good.

Mangaluru is a major hub for trading, a city of more then 7 lakhs residents... This city has to be well planned for growth, cannot be allowed to wallow in narrow roads and lanes accumulated with filth and garbage !!! Shifting of APMC trading center was a wise decision, taken to decongest the developing city, by the City Corporation.... In Mumbai we had to shift such wholesale markets, outside the periphery of the city.....

What happened to the stay order sought by two merchants who were doing business in this market ?

Now, if if the administration permits them, the court won't allow it because there is a dispute filed in the courts. That's why, shouldn't rush in a hurry - should see the repercussions also.

City corporation decision to shift market to far away place is illogic and troublesome to common public. Instead of providing easy access to pubic to purchase vegetable + fruits, city cor[poration has made their life hell. How can they trave 25 to 30 kms to buy their daily needs. why the corporation did not make alternate arrangement in the city. This is illogic step taken by the corportion. The market in Baikampady is not clean and there is no facility there. Corporatin did not mind to make the market readily availalble and just asked the traders to shift their business. This is nothing but Andha kanoon. There is no logic in it. Mangalore city corporation never cooperated with road side businessmen or any other businessmen.

Do you know that this market is wholesale as well as retail in nature ?

Early in the morning there is auction for wholesale. Thereafter, by 9 O'clock or so, all those who bought the wholesale items, sit on the roads or assemble their carts to sell retail which makes this place too crowded. No parking, no place to move about, dirty leftovers of vegetable and fruits thrown around, so on.

Let the retail sellers go to local markets that are existing in all places. Leave the Central Market once the auction is over. This will help the authorities to maintain cleanliness and discipline.

Well, No ! We do our own way of business. Good then, move to Baikampady !

Exactly. Even the people having shops in central market, facing road side have huge trouble as the street vegetable vendors selling fruits and veggies on carts blocks their ways and cause trouble. Govt officials too do not interfere in this matter as the hafta is being sent regularly.

What is the intention of these monoolists? Do they want to spread coronavirus in the heart of the city? Dear officials do not bow down to these pressure tactics... Please continue the market at Baikampady. It is spacious. You just need to develop infrastructure there.

The City Corporation claims to have made alternate arrangements for wholesale/retail fruit & vegetable vendors to carry out their businesses. What about the traders/merchants having shops in the market building (facing the road)? What alternate arrangements have been made for them? So also the mutton and beef stalls? Absolutely nothing as I have been told. This is ridiculous! How are they going to earn their daily bread? What are our 'good for nothing' politicians doing? If alternate arrangements were made before demolition of Kadri and Kankanady markets, why not here? Urgent corrective measures have to be taken to safeguard the interests of these poor traders.

You are taking as if you know very well. Central market not only has vegetable vendors but other shops too. Where is the government shifting them to? Have they made any allotment for them to move? No!!! Vegetable vendors are allotted APMC not others shops. And at this time people are struggling financially and I don’t think it’s right to not allow them to open their shops without making proper arrangements for them

Prabhuji- agree.. but government officials need to follow due procedures, inorder to demolish buildings. Advanced notice need to be served etc..
And not like this.. this is called opportunistic approach.. i believe officials have IAS credentials and doing this way doesn't give them any respect..
