Bangalore, Feb 2: Vice President Hamid Ansari’s secretariat has clarified letter forwarded to the Belgaum Deputy Commissioner’s office mentioning the address as Mahrashtra was ``inadvertent and unintentional.’’
The Vice President’s secretariat has in a press statement clarified that the representation from Ms Shaheen Rafique Ahamad Basarikatti, resident of Masjid Galli, Parshwad of Khanpur taluk in Belgaum district against the Khanpur Town Panchyat Committee, was forwarded Deputy Commissioner of Belgaum District for appropriate action.
The full address of the Deputy Commissioner mentions Maharashtra State instead of Karnataka State where Belgaum is located.
"This mistake in the address is inadvertent and unintentional and should not be construed in any manner. The Vice President’s Secretariat deeply regrets this error,’’ the press release said.
It may be recalled that Karnataka’s Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who is also the Belgaum district in-charge minister, had strongly criticised the Vice President’s mistake and had publicly urged the Centre not to unnecessarily provoke the Maharashtra-Karnataka row over Belgaum.
The Kannada writers and pro-Kannada organisations as well as Karnataka Rakshana Vedike had also condemned the Vice President for his ``ignorance’’ about Belgaum’s status and the state to which the district belonged.
