Udupi: Fishing boat from Malpe drowns at Goa

Udupi, Jun 3: A deep-sea fishing boat that had left from Malpe for undertaking fishing drowned near Goa on Tuesday, June 2 afternoon. All the seven fishermen aboard the boat were rescued.

The boat titled 'Sri Durga Hanuma' owned by Deepika from Vadabhandeshwar, Malpe had left the shore in Malpe on May 23. After conducting fishing in Maharashtra, it was returning to its base when the fibreglass covering of the boat gave way due to strong wind. The accident happened at around 2 pm on Tuesday about 27 nautical miles off the coast at Red House, Goa. As the water began to gush into the boat, the boat began to sink. The fishermen immediately sent SOS messages to other boats.

All the seven fishermen were rescued by Shivabhairava boat that was nearby at the time. On account of this tragedy, fish catches and diesel worth about Rs 8 lac went down into the sea while the total loss has been estimated at Rs 60 lac.
