Kasargod, Jan 28: In a heart-rending incident that occurred on Wednesday January 27, 60 year-old Nabisa, her grandchildren, Ali (6) and Fatimat Suhra (4), who were sleeping inside a thatched hut, were burnt alive. The incident occurred at Tanoor Hosan Kadappura.
Bifatima, mother of the two children, works as a caretaker for the puerperal women. She had been to a nearby village for this purpose, and had stayed there for the night. The father of the children had died sometime back.
As the children were fearful of darkness, a kerosene lamp was lit and kept in a corner. As the house is located near the sea, heavy breeze that blew at night, spread the tiny flame from the kerosene lamp to the walls built by using wooden poles and coconut fronds. Within a few minutes, all the three were gutted and the entire hut changed into a heap of ash. The local people, who saw the flames rising from the house, rushed to the spot. But it was too late.
