Sania Mirza Calls off Engagement Due to 'incompatibility'

Hyderabad, Jan 28 (IANS) Tennis star Sania Mirza has called off her engagement to childhood friend Sohrab Mirza due to incompatibility, sources close to her family said.

Six months after the engagement took place here amid much fanfare, the couple decided to part ways as they felt incompatible.

Sania's father Imran Mirza confirmed here Thursday that the engagement had been called off. The two families took the decision, Imran said in a SMS sent to some media organisations. He, however, did not divulge the reason.

Sources close to the tennis star's family said differences cropped up between Sania and Sohrab after the engagement and they now found themselves "incompatible".

The engagement had taken place at a glittering function here July 10 last year. The 22-year-old tennis star had exchanged rings with Sohrab, 23, an MBA student and son of a city-based businessman.

Sania's family had then said that the marriage would take place only after a couple of years and that she would focus on her tennis career now.

No question of Incompatibility! Actually it would have been very difficult for Sohrab to handle her. Good that he got rid of her early.

All Girls are not beautiful/smart, similarly all the boys are not handsome/smart...But most of the boys/girls will find a partner. There are many factors like family,character,money,habits...so and so on. Since marriage is a personal choice, we need not/must not cross beyond some line/lakshman Rehka. Guys/girls keep your comments to yourself and leave then in peace. They will find a partner, better or worst is upto them, we need not scratch our head. Girl/boy will have their own choice/preference, it is better agree before the marriage. It is not a first break in engagement/marriage.....several has taken place. In a simple way " we need not bother what is been cooked in others house, let us concentrate on our own first"

Deepak, Mangalore, Could you or any Mangalorean boy ever imagine marrying Aishwarya Rai ? Sania's case is as simple as that. It requires eligibility to marry a successful woman. Else, grapes are sour.

I as a woman am proud of Sania of the level she has risen to against all odds. For me grapes aren't sour but they surely are for those who can't digest her boldness. Shorab may be having his own reasons but for those who still think that woman's position is in the kitchen / delivering future generation, girls like Sania are not made for you. Remember - Sania is under the care of her father who still manages her affairs - do not compare her with Rakhee Sawant.

Everybody has the right to choose or reject .It was a wise decision to break up the engagement than getting divorced later . Lydia Lobo, Kadri writes as though Sania informed her personally regarding the pressure from the boy's family side to give up tennis. People like Lydia have nothing to do than assume and comment.

Come on Lydia, the world is not so foolish to believe her statement when she said she wont play after marriage, there was something cooking, but lets wish happines to both, its their life and they deserve every bit, Sania Mirza has been one of the finest Indian sports ambassador for India, she has grace when she talks to the Media, speaks very boldly and has been very decent in everything she does, the country should support her.

We dont have very many female sports people shining because of lack of support, let her be a role model for all young women to come forward, all the best Sania

Seing some of the comments here, I guess my fellow Indian men have a long walk to reach a state of security. It's only insecurity that doesn'nt allow a woman as a equal being. If I have stuff in me , I dont have to rely on my being a Man to make myself commanding and respectable. This is to be treated as a personal matter of the two individauls involved. We men must learn to treat women equally.

Marriages are made in heaven. They only broke the engagement, not the marriage so don't shed any tears either for the boy or the girl. If Sania wanted to quit the Tennis after the marriage, then she must have got this "dictum" from Shorab and / or his family. She is young, can wait for the marriage. She should concentrate in her career and continue to play for India for some more years.

Good point Lydia. It seems like everyone has something against Sania, I guess it is the male chauvinism. People do not seem to be able to handle a woman's success. If one is confident about a relationship then it does not matter which partner is famous or successful. I am sorry for both for not making this work, but nothing is end of the world. There will always be another game for a comeback story of our lives.

Lydia Lobo, I agree gender bias still exist. However, in this issue the girl has to be blamed because she is celebrity and couldn’t cope with his family traditions/customs. If she could have been very meticulous about her decision to engage to be married then this engagement wouldn’t end in sour note and being his childhood friend the both the family would have been known to each other for years so there is no question of incompatibility. The celebrities are hunger for fame and success and no one could imagine Sania Mirza getting married soon, that would have noose for her career. Let us wait what will be the next move to Sania Mirza, the glam doll of Indian tennis.

Everybody sympathizes with Shorab Mirza which hints that she is at fault. Does anybody remember that she had announced recently that she will not play tennis after marriage ? Which means she had pressure from the boy's side to stop playing. Why isn't her situation understood ? A person come up in life through some field wants remain in that field for the rest of his/her life. Is it her problem if he couldn't cope up with her routine ? Would the same reaction exhibited if the star was a male ? Gender bias still exists !

That was bound to happen - sooner or later, I suppose. It is actually a stupid idea that you get engaged and then wait for years to marry! The boy was too young anyway and don`t think was matured enough. Moreover, he was also fairly rich as he was the son of a businessman, and I don`t think he would have liked the idea of Mirza`s going around and playing tennis, etc.
