Mangaluru, May 25: The drive to demolish the old market at Kankanady, which was plagued by multifarious problems, has begun. Once the demolition exercise is completed, a new market-cum-commercial complex will be built in its place at a cost of Rs 41 crore.
The Kankanady old market is about 24 years old, and it suffered from the problem of lack of basic amenities. There were no facilities for customers and traders in the old building. The building had become dilapidated and leaking roof and cracked walls had posed danger to people. The building was housing 98 shops. Water flooding in the building was a common phenomenon during the monsoon months and the issue of stinking toilets had become grave.
As addressing these issues and repairing the building were found to be uneconomical and impractical, a new market is planned to be built here. Within a month, the work of demolition is projected to be completed.
All the traders have now been shifted to a temporary market built at a cost of about Rs 1 crore a few months back. The new building will also have 98 shops and an exclusive fish market.
