Udupi, Jan 21: The differences between the Swamijis of the eight Mutts here had come to the fore during the ascension to the Paryaya throne by Puttige Sri Sugunendrateertha Swamiji in the year 2008, when none of the other Swamijis took part in the Paryaya procession, and the outgoing Paryaya Swamiji, Sri Vidyasagarateertha of Krishnapur Mutt, had abandoned the Akshaya Patre, ladle and key to the Mutt near the Sarvajna Peetha, for being collected by the Paryaya Swamiji, instead of personally handing them over to him to signify transfer of power and position.
It is said that there were pressures on Sri Lakshmivarateertha Swamiji of Shirur Mutt, not to personally accept these items from the outgoing Swamiji. The anger of the other Swamijis at the Puttige Swamiji is because of the fact that he ascended the Paryaya throne in violation of the set tradition that a Swamiji who crosses the sea is not entitled to worship Lord Sri krishna. However, Sri Lakshmivarateertha Swamiji chose to ignore this advice, and personally collected these items from Sri Sugunendrateertha Swamiji.
At the Darbar held later, Sri Vishwapriyateertha Swamiji of Admar Mutt and the outgoing Paryaya Swamiji, Sri Sugunendrateertha, did not turn up. It is said that Sri Sugunendrateertha took a decision not to take part in the Paryaya, as it would have caused discomfort for the other Swamijis.
There has already been a difference between different Mutts about the following of different almanacs while deciding Ekadashi, as a result of which people having allegiance to different Mutts follow the alamanac of that Mutt and observe Ekadashi on different days. Efforts made in the past to streamline the procedure to decide Ekadashi have failed to yield any results.
