Mangaluru: MLC Ivan D'Souza condemns government for ‘humiliating’ migrant workers

Mangaluru, May 11: MLC, Ivan D'Souza, addressing a press meet here on Monday May 11 on the issue of arranging for the return of migrant workers stranded in Karnataka to their native places, said that it is the duty of the administration to arrange for the train journeys of all the workers stuck in the district.

He accused the central government of collecting money from the worker for their home-bound journey. He stated that Rs 40 was collected from each of the passenger towards KSRTC bus fare and Rs 960 towards railway fare.

Ivan stated that the district administration had clearly violated the directions of the government on the issue of facilitating safe return of the migrant workers. He pointed out that the government had instructed that those who are willing to return should apply by filling application and filing the same online through Seva Sindhu app. He charged the district administration of not conforming to this condition.

He said that the migrant workers were shifted to the railway station without providing any security, and of collecting charges from them at the railway station. "The official claim is that there is an order to that affect. But none of them know who had issued this order. The central government has collected Rs 150 crore from the railway department. But here, it has collected train fare and money for food from the poor workers," he observed.

Ivan advised Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, to rise to the occasion and raise his voice against this injustice. He asked the MP to become the voice of unorganized workers and come out into the open to solve inter-state problems by raising the topic.

The situation migrant worker or expatriate are under PM Modi's government is same. At least for the migrant worker they can go back to the native places. For expatriates no one is caring having no jobs, enough food and shelter.

The ill conceived planning of PM Modi's government which wasted crucial time arranging flower bed for President Donald Trump even being alerted by Congress leader Mr.Rahul Gandhi by twitter. But his warning are kept aside instead of of lock down Prime Minister asked the citizens to 'Clap' and 'light candles' to shoo the Corona virus.

Day by day India's numbers increasing and country is not far behind 'Italy'. Today India's per capita health expenditure is less than Sri lanka which suffered three decades of civil war.

The nation has already lost 15-20 crores jobs in organisation sector. Surprisingly, the companies who cut wages and fired employees are contributing 'PM Care' funds.

If late PM V.P. Singh never even considered charging the Indians stuck in Kuwait in 1990 for no fault of their own. Why Modi charging Indians stranded abroad by COVID-19 but also the millions of poor trapped by his lockdown decision?

    Sir, one question.

If our migrant workers are so desperate to return to their villages, why are the Bangladeshis and Rohingyas are not interested to return to their home countries?

The socio-economic conditions/problems/concerns being similar to both the categories of migrants, where are they hiding, who is sheltering them and who is feeding them?

You have plenty of them in Mangalore too!! Sir, please throw some light on these Bangladeshis & Rohingyas too.

We could be lip-sympathisers or working-sympathisers but it depends on our portfolio. In any case we have served people at any portfolio and still do. But if you are unable to handle the situation then admit your inability, step down and we will take the full charge and serve people to the maximum. Don't expect us to serve people while you rule and enjoy and have fun at our expense and neglect poor people and top of that beg money from them.

This morning I saw a few taken to Mangalore Junction station from State bank, but many more were asked to come back tomorrow. It was total confusion and no proper coordination by the district authorities and the railway. Now so many of the migrant labour are in the State bank and Nehru maidan area. They have left their accommodation and no place to stay.

A very soul searching statement by Ivan but truth is very bitter for BJP. It is very painful for BJP to live with this reality so they will accuse and abuse Ivan without any option to save thier face. If this is not a humanitarian issue and need to be addressed by the govt then what is the value of human being for this govt?????....BJP doesn't care for people any more. They have EVMs to do the job without cost.

Does anyone even take this guy seriously?? Many cadres in Congress too do not like or agree with him. If this gimmick was a strategy for revival , there is nothing wrong in it.
But for a change why dont we have a good young dynamic leader in Congress launched? At least we in DK can look forward to something new. Its a childs guess, that if you field the same candidate you get the same results. In cricket if you use the same bowler who was hit for six, repeatedly, for sure he will be hit for six again. The same logic applies here. We then cry that our party is not winning , and blame the 'EVMs' making us even more stupid as the same loser if fielded again after 5 years to give the same result.

These type of press conferences does NOT serve any purpose. Especially from people and party that is NOT in power. I was expecting something very concrete.
The need for the hour is 'ground work', peaceful protests within the norms of rules laid down for COVID19, that would high light common man plights. Australians held a protest yesterday against lockdown. Similarly Congress should initiate something that is forceful and would send the message to the central management. Business and middle class people like us are bearing the brunt of this lock down. Its absurd.

Readers, since independence, India has never witnessed such turbulence.... anxiety has gripped every citizen of this nation... Life has been turned upside down, yet we had a commanding leader, who managed to control the situation, unlike many other nations.... Healthcare, employment, migrants, logistics, are a huge problem... States should collectively collude with the central government and bring the situation in control... Sadly politics is been played out, to intentionally humiliate, abuse PM Modiji, for the sole purpose of scoring brownie points, in the bargain !!! Readers, the popularity ratings of PM Modiji, in 2019 elections was 71•9%.... but today the ratings have surpassed all expectations... is precisely 79%.... despite desperate attempt, to abuse, tarnish the image of PM Modiji, who continue as a role model for all Indians !!

No worker till today received call or message regarding arrangements of transport, despite giving all personal details and contact number during registration. What is the need of online registration if details not used to contact workers, or do proper arrangements instead all the workers gathering at one place. Migrant workers should have been provided work, pay, food and shelter.Almost 75%of the roads in Mangalore are dug up.Thier services could have been utilized for completing the unfinished infrastructure works before monsoon.Lockdown with less traffic would have been ideal time to do this. Many would have happily stayed back. Those who wanted to still go back, facilities should have been provided. Some talk of "development" what are they doing for the "development warriors".Photo ops and flex boards are not enough if stomachs remain empty. Many may never return because nobody understood them.

If you read the horror stories of migrants, they r spinechilling! The initial lot of migrants were from the extreme power end of economic strata; after about 25 days even those who had settled down three in their towels as they had no jobs, thrown out of houses, no money & were turned to begging status, which was supposedly the end of their holding & tolerance power! If news reports in reputed dailies are to be believed that these tired migrants just want to get home as fast as possible, as they have gone through the worst experience, never expected in their cities of dreams!

Already cold war started in between america and saudi. Upto now America held umbrella up above saudi arabia and protected it. Differences crop-up in regard to oil prices in OPEC...where in america lost revenue. Wait for few more days. Iran will grab whole of arabia and turn same like earlier Persian Gulf. Latter on you can come down to India and start a manufacturing pakoda factory in a large scale.
