Udupi: Chess tournament 'Checkmate COVID-19' raises Rs 15 lac for Karnataka CM's Relief Fund

Udupi, May 7: The Checkmate COVID-19 chess tournament conducted by the Government of Karnataka along with the United Karnataka Chess Association and Mobile Premier League (MPL), raised Rs 15 lac in proceeds to donate to the Karnataka CM’s COVID-19 Relief Fund. A total of 19,245 players registered for the tournament, which had a total prize worth of Rs 10 lac.

Chess grandmaster Ankit Rajpara won the tournament held on May 2 and 3 on the MPL app. He was awarded Rs 1 lac. Grandmaster Bhakti Kulkarni won the award for the top-ranked female player and Shakuntala Devi won the award for top-ranked player above 60 years of age. Both were also awarded Rs 25,000 each, respectively, the release said.
