Mangaluru: Dr Ganapathi, team's Bubble Helmet brings major relief to COVID-19 battle

Media Release

Mangaluru, May 7: Dr Ganapathi and his team developed a new equipment to ensure better treatment, the safety of health workers and the patients in battling COVID-19.

Giving a major boost to the battle against COVID-19, the team led by Dr Ganapathi, medical director, Mangala Hospital & Mangala Kidney Foundation, here developed the new equipment ensuring better treatment and safety of the health workers.

The Bubble helmet is an equipment that will be revolutionary in the treatment of COVID-19. The helmet is an alternative option to the traditional oxygen masks. It completely covers the head of the patient. It is connected through a special collar on it. This device will help the patient to overcome breathing problems and avoid using the ventilator facility.

The automatic disinfection gateway is another equipment developed that is designed for the decontamination of people, one at a time. It is completely controlled electronically as the sensors mounted in the chamber detects the entry of a person and starts the hydrogen peroxide mist generation process.

Meanwhile, the hospital authorities said that they will hand over the technology and have taken a patent on the product.

What is helmet-based ventilation?

• The so-called 'bubble' helmets, which are transparent and air-tight, help patients with respiratory problems breathe better and are more effective than a face mask, a new study says.

• In fact, the headgear is so effective it can prevent the critically ill from needing non-invasive ventilation.

Patients with the unusual type of ventilation also have a better survival rate and spend less time in the intensive care unit.
• The helmet is sealed with an air-tight collar that wraps around the user's neck.
• The helmet has 'several advantages' over the face mask including the fact that it is less likely to leak.
• Medics are also able to increase air pressure into the helmet which keeps 'the airway and lungs open' improving oxygen levels.
• Patients also found it more comfortable and were able to watch television or read a book.
