Mangaluru, Apr 22: Mangaluru taluk panchayat president Muhammed Monu has requested chief minister B S Yediyurappa to extend terms of the gram panchayats in the backdrop of coronavirus pandemic.

In a letter addressed to the chief minister, Monu pointed out that the current terms of a large number of gram panchayats in the state will come to an end during the next month. As the government officers and employees are busy with their work with corona monitoring squads, he said it would be impossible for them to attend election work. He recalled that in the year 1995 when the terms of gram panchayats had ended, the then government had extended the terms of gram panchayats by six months through an ordinance.

He stated that to help the workers to continue to curb the spread of coronavirus infection, it is necessary to extend terms of the gram panchayats.
