Mangaluru, Apr 19: In a generous gesture to help the local community during this time of chaos caused by the nationwide lockdown due to Coronavirus pandemic, St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, came up with an initiative to distribute kits consisting of food grains and essential items to the families in Neermarga and Vamanjoor region.

As a part of this campaign, SJEC handed over 100 kits to Neermarga Grama Panchayat for distribution to the people worst affected by the nationwide lockdown. Each kit comprised of a rice bag, toor dal, tamarind, chilli, palm oil, table salt, jeera, coriander, mustard seeds and biscuits packs. On behalf of St Joseph Engineering College, Fr Rohith D’Costa, assistant director of the college, handed over the kits to the president of Neermarga Grama Panchayat, in the presence of Panchayat Development officer and other members of the Panchayat. 

The representatives from the Grama Panchayat said that the kits would go a long way in catering to the needs of the impoverished families in the vicinity of Neermarga and thanked the management of the college coming forward to aid the needy in such troubled times. 

The college has always been in the forefront to rush to the necessities of the local community in the times of need. As a part of its Educational Social Responsibility, the college has adopted five villages and has been actively providing timely assistance to each of its adopted villages.

Earlier this month, St Joseph Engineering College had contributed Rs 2,25,000 towards the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. 

Apart from engaging themselves through online mode of the teaching-learning process, the faculty members and students of SJEC have been voluntarily taking part in all University and national level initiatives by contributing innovative ideas to curb issues caused by COVID-19.
