Bangalore, Dec 11: Realizing that getting the Sanskrit Univerisy Bill passed through the legislature is a hard task, the state government had planned to give birth to the University through an ordinance. Various promises were made on this issue from various forums. However, it is learnt that the state Governor has returned the ordinance without promulgating it, with the note that a suitable decision may be taken on the issue, only after moving a bill in the legislature.
The state government had sent the ordinance for the Governor’s assent on October 14, when both the houses were not in session. But, it is learnt that the Governor’s office had sent back the ordinance on November 3.
The Governor has already expressed his dissatisfaction about the yardsticks and administrative procedures being applied while selecting the vice-chancellors, members for various councils and boards of universities.
It may be recalled that a discussion on the proposed Sanskrit University Bill had been initiated in the previous session, but the opposition parties had vehemently opposed the idea of setting up of a new university without discussing all the related issues threadbare in the legislature, alleging that the proposal reeked of the government’s agenda towards saffronization of education. The University, planned to be set up in Mysore, proposes to impart education in Vedas, Vedanta, ancient Indian science etc.
