Mangaluru, Apr 7: The long-standing demand for virus testing laboratory has become officially functional at the government Wenlock Hospital here.
The virus research and disease testing laboratory which has been set up at the Wenlock Hospital here has gone through the mandatory scrutiny of the government and has obtained permission to begin its activities officially. Therefore, there is no need for the patients to wait for their reports to come from Bengaluru of Shivamogga testing laboratories. Their reports will be ready in a few hours.
As the results come out faster, the district administration will be able to take proper action instantly. This laboratory will come in handy for even neighbouring districts. The virus testing laboratory was permitted to be opened at the Wenlock Hospital on trial basis, and testing had begun on April 1. From April 7 onwards, the centre has been transformed into a full scale laboratory. Henceforth, report on throat swabs can be got within hours unlike in the past when patients had to wait for four to five days to get their reports.
During his visit to the city sometime back, state health minister B Sriramulu, had talked about opening of testing laboratory in all the districts in view of increasing number of coronavirus cases. As the city is equipped with international airport, people living in foreign countries keep arriving here. As this contributed to higher number of coronavirus cases, the need for a testing laboratory here was badly felt.
