Hubballi, Apr 4: Hundreds of people including women attacked police with bricks and stones after they were advised by them against performing mass namaz in view of risks posed by coronavirus. This incident happened near Bilal Masuti in Aralikatti Colony on Mantoor Road here on Friday, April 3.
In the incident, town police station assistant sub-inspector and constables suffered minor injuries. They were treated at Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital. Relating to the incident, five women have been taken into custody.
To offer Friday prayers, a crowd had assembled at the mosque for namaz. The police tried to dissuade the crowd from performing namaz in view of coronavirus scare and ban on assembly of large crowds. Locals engaged the police in arguments following which they used filthy words against the police and attacked them with stones, bricks, and wooden splinters. They not only obstructed the police from performing their duties but also blocked Mantoor Road.
When the police tried to take three persons into custody, the crowd attacked the police jeep with stones and footwear.
