23-year-old Kerala doctor postpones marriage for duty, says patients first

Daijiworld Media Network - Thiruvananthapuram (SHP)

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 1: Dr Shifa M Mohammed is now the recipient of major appreciation after she picked her duty over getting married. A house surgeon, Dr Shifa was at the isolation ward of the Pariyaram medical college hospital in Kannur on Sunday, March 29 instead of preparing to get married to a Dubai based businessman. Rather than donning the bridal finery, the young anti-COVID-19 warrior donned the personal protection equipment (PPE). "Marriage can wait, not my patients, who are struggling for their lives in isolation wards," she told her groom and parents who readily agreed to her decision.

“In every girl’s, life wedding is an important event. But my daughter has put her social responsibility and professional commitment before her personal needs. When she suggested postponement of her wedding, we readily agreed to it,” said her father Mukkam Mohammed, a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party and LDF district convenor in Kozhikode.

“When we approached the groom Anus Mohammad, a businessman in Dubai, he also readily agreed to it. I am a social worker and my wife is a teacher. Both my daughters have imbibed this spirit from our social work,” Mohammed added.

The eldest daughter of the family is also a doctor and currently posted at the Kozhikode medical college hospital.

When asked on her decision, Dr Shifa said, “I did not do anything great. I only did my duty. There are many like me who postponed their personal engagements. I am only one among them."

"I always enjoy serving my patients," she added.

Recently the Kerala government converted Pariyaram medical college hospital in Kannur to a dedicated facility to treat coronavirus patients. While the state has reported two disease-related deaths, over 234 people have been placed in isolation wards.

I wonder, Despite Kerala having such passionate and committed doctors, why that state is running from pillar to post to get the Kasargod Karnataka border opened.

This lady in question knows too well that the marriage scheduled can not happen at any cost and that she has to work as no leave will be granted during these times. Taking undue mileage!

She must have become an intern just may be a month back. There are so many doctors working day and night actually dealing with corona pts in Wenlock hospital but no one has the time to summon media and gloat about themselves.

Groom from Dubai may not return India soon. And you 23 Years old can serve as a bachelor for sometime. In our city all the marriages sheduled till June are rescheduled next year. It will be confidence boost for the staff who are working like the soldiers in POk.

with this kind of human service Indian health workers team will win covid 19. at least now people should realize value of their service , rather than attacking . now nobody complains doctors are commercial. govt must appreciate their service not by clapping.

One more thing is they can't celebrate the way every big fat weddings have taken place in that state at the least they have to wait for 3 more months & chances are he too might bring in the same disease she is fighting right now in the hospital & infect her too or she might infect him by picking the infection from the hospital.
So Good Wise Move by inspirational lady.
