Lockdown impact: With price dropping, farmers forced to throw away 1,500 litres of milk

Daijiworld Media Network - Chikkodi (SHP)

Chikkodi, Mar 31: The 21-day nation-wide lockdown has scaled down demand for milk. The lockdown also impacted the export trade of the commodity due to the sealing of borders making it difficult for the suppliers to reach out to their customers.

After the hotels and the restaurants shut down their business temporarily, the demand further slumped.

Meanwhile, the sorry state of affairs of the milk was seen, when senior journalist Marya Shakil uploaded a video on her official Twitter handle. The video reportedly shows an instance in North Karnataka's Chikkodi where a supplier can be seen throwing away over 1500 litres of milk because it could not be distributed.

As per reports, diaries which were earlier buying milk for Rs 32 per litre have now stated that they will shell out Rs 15 per litre. This price drop which could spell disaster for the farmers would have to be now reviewed by the Karnataka government to minimise the damage.

Yes they should serve this milk to their own community but on ther other side there is nothing that farmer can depend on except farming and cultivation .As my personal experience my father is also a farmer and i know how they survive how they earn even 1 RS/- matter for them and this is the lesson to the government to think about it. The farmer said " Government spending Government ending".

yes, I am totally agree with you. As a daughter of farmer, I know how important it is for farmers. they do not have any other way to survive. they have only farming and cultivation on which they depends to survive. But instead of helping them government is taking advantage of the situation. in the lockdown, the only business which is helping in maintaining the nation's economy is farming and government is thinking of using it for their own profit. so, I do not think that the farmers did anything wrong by throwing milk. It is the good lesson for government to understand the problems of farmers.

I totally agree with this comment.Instead of throwing away milk into the river, it should be distributed to the people who are in dire need for it. Government should take care of the necessary arrangements that are required to ensure zero wastage of food and proper distribution of it.

    1. Well with all the lock down in place, they may not be able to too far to distribute to the so called poor (as if they rich)
    2. With the lockdown/Janatha curfew, that milk might be sitting for 2 days and already spoiled, who want the spoiled milk even if it is free??

They would have distributed or sold. But, without any transport facility to do so, milk must have got spoiled... They may not be having big refrigerators to store. Adding to that, here cities to had no milk supply since three days. Otherwise nandini tankers collect from the villages. No one is fool to throw their hard work on the streets...

Easy to give suggestions sir. These farmers are daily wage earners. First of all they do not have transport facilities. Secondly they do not have money. Thirdly even if they make ghee, they'll have to wait days for it to get sold. What will they eat until then?

Never expected the milk federation to let down its customers at the time of crisis, they should not have stopped buying milk for two days, whatever their stock position....they made profits all these years, they let its suppliers at the time of crisis.

What is wrong with these people? Yesterday a farmer dumped a truck load of grapes down the river today this person drained milk into the river are these guys ok or out of their mind? They could have fed so many hunger men/women and kids. God give some mind to these people at this time while people are going thru worse war of the century a war with someone who cannot been seen. At least people will bless and pray for their future harvest.
