Mangaluru, Mar 18: A message circulating on WhatsApp asking Mangalureans to stay indoors due to spraying of disinfectant is fake.
The fake message reads, “All are requested to stay indoors after 10 pm tonight till tomorrow morning 5 am. There will be disinfectant procedure in order to contain the coronavirus (COVID-19).”
However, authorities have confirmed that one cannot control the disease by spraying disinfectants and asked people to not pay heed to rumours and fake news. Meanwhile, people can control the spread of Coronavirus by maintaining hygiene such as repeatedly washing hands, avoiding handshakes, covering mouth and nose with flexed elbow while coughing and sneezing and avoiding crowded places.
People are also warned not to allow strangers who claim they have come to disinfectant as a precautionary measure against COVID-19, into their homes.
As per government orders dated March 11, 2020, it is a serious offence to spread rumours, false messages pertaining to coronavirus. The district administration will take stringent action against those who spread false message in social media regard to COVID 19. A report has been already submitted to the deputy commissioner to take action on few websites for publishing false messages which has led to panic and confusion among public, said press a release from the district administration.
